Great Moments in Jamming Beam History

By PhantomFO, in X-Wing

I used it in Eindhoven SoS against Whisper after I lost one blue sq. Escort to Redline and Whisper. Sure I could've shot Whisper with primary attack and do 1 damage and let her keep Evade for cloaking that ve could've used to arc dodge everything probably. Instead I shot Jamming Beam and got rid of her evade token, which led to a close block and range 1 shots. Whisper was left with 1 hull left. She didn't die, but was seriously crippled that she had to be out of combat out of fear for 3 turns to give me time to kill Redline/Soontir. Next opportunity to shoot at Whisper killed her.

At the CAC I had someone running a Sloane swarm strip the reinforce token off my RAC with the jamming beam from his Lambda -class before his swarm lit it up.

Was totally worth it.

This. A swarm-esque force that can sacrifice one attack to whomp a reinforce token before laying into it is the best use I've found. 3 T70s firing on an unprotected target is better than 4 firing on a reinforced one.

A friend has also made use of them against phantoms - If you only have one shot at range 2, the odds are low of a kill, but the odds of a hit are reasonable. Normally the defender (echo) would accept losing a shield then bugger off into cloak at the end of the round and with his ability could be bloody anywhere by the next engagement round.

With a jam token, there's no damage but next turn the phantom is stuck relying on a non-too-great dial.

Jamming beam, more playable than Barriss.

Toronto system open round 6. Had a phantom at range 3 of a B-wing. Only shot of the round so I figured why not go for the evade token and mess up his formation. Actually picked up the card to read it for the first time all day and realized it's only range 1-2. Oh well. Put the card back down and went back to forgetting it was there.

Just today, Iggy-B missed his primary shot, and stripped Mace's target lock before Mace could put fire into Iggy-C. That saved Iggy-C a few damage there, which led to the game being much closer than it otherwise would have been.

Those Jamming Beams were a sort of ever-present thing to keep track of, more than a threat, that game, but then, and in maybe two other instances it did work, always stripping TLs before I could shoot, always saving the Bots (and the Bossk) a hit or two, or denying me a banked TL for a future round.

Nothing looks dumber than a Vynder with a weapons disabled token and no target lock. Especially when he chose to let the named B-Wings shoot first.

Conversely, I played Brobots+x for a while, and used the jamming beams to actual meaningful effect AND hit, maybe twice. THey're so very rarely useful as to be mostly irrelevant even at 0 points. Because they're the second rather than the first shot, primarily - the difference in utility between Maul and B is night and day.

This is why cannons need to be free on the B-Wing. Because this is the only cannon they ever y carry

Top 8 at my last trial had a list featuring two B-wings with tractor beams. It's not ubiquitous but I've seen other lists using tractor Bs as well

Not every upgrade needs to be "good."

The only thing it needs is also having Range 3, since that would greatly expand it's potential role.

I guess it has a small one in being able to remove Reinforce tokens before swarms shoot, but it could do a bit better. A longer-range Jamming Beam can be used by a higher Init ship to strip Lock tokens before folks fire off Torpedoes. That's not a great or powerful role, but it'd at least be a bit wider of a niche. However, without Range 3, it kinda doesn't function as a Lock-stripper.

Rexlar Brath, the hero of the empire. He fired it at Redline who had double locked me ready to unload a proton torp at r2 when I'd done a 1bank in. suddenly redline is firing an unmodded shot at me and Rexlar K-turned in behind the following turn to light him up!

I've angered a few Hatchetmen with it. Everytime it was glorious!

Other than that, basically only mediocre uses. Maybe it was worth ditching a lock from M9G8 once, but eh.

Jaming beam, apart from the rest of its slew of unfortunate mechanics, has the misfortune of being FAR MORE USEFUL if fired before the enemy

One thing I wish ffg had been braver about was introducing alternating modes of fire for cannons. For example, imagine if you could perform a bonus attack with jamming beam (at -1 die) when you missed with a primary weapon attack

Suddenly, it's worth 1-2 points!!!

Except IG-88B already can and it hardly ever makes a difference
