Desert

By MonkOfDoom, in Talisman Rules Questions

In the desert, (original 4th ed board, my understanding is the upgrade kit uses the original board), the text says "Lose 1 Life". And then under that it says "Do not draw a card if there is already one in the space."

However, you are never directed to draw a card, so why the note about when not to draw one.

We've always played it as "Lose 1 Life. If you do not lose 1 Life, Draw 1 Card. Do not draw a card if there is already one in the space."

Do other people agree with this interpretation?

The upgrade kit changes a few spaces. Like the Desert and places where you can gain Fate.

So the Desert spaces in the Revised edition say "Lose 1 life and then draw a card (if one isn't already there)". So you always lose a life and if you survive draw a card if possible.

Interesting, but that actually makes me wonder about what you said. You said the space says "Lose 1 Life and then draw a card."

And after that you say that you always lose a life and then draw a card if you survive.

Those appear to be contradictory. The space, as you quote it, doesn't say anything about survival being a condition for drawing a card. Unless you mean survive in the "You didn't just lose you last life" sense.

Well you can't draw a card if your character is dead!

Black Industries 4th edition board had just a typing mistake. It was amended by the old BI FAQ. Desert has always been "Lose 1 Life and then Draw 1 Card" since 2nd edition.

I figured, which is why we play that way. It's been 14 years since I played 2E though, so my memory of that is pretty shot. Soon my upgrade kit arrives, soon!

do you still lose a life in the desert if you encounter a character there instead of the space?

No, you don't lose a life in the desert if you encounter a character there.

Yep. Official ruling is that if you encounter a Character you don't encounter the Space. No Space text applies in this case. Chapel, Graveyard, Cursed Glade, Black Knight, Desert, Chasm, Cell, Guard Room are safe if you choose to encounter a Character there.

If there's a face up card on the desert when you land there, do you get to pick it up before losing a life?

I always thought you have to deal with face up cards before encountering a spaces text (eg fighting enemies before doing something in the village), but the desert is a funny mix of draw card plus other stuff.

I think you lose a life first.

The space is only saying: Lose a life, then draw 1 card.

If we think logical: you lose 1 life before encounter anything on the space. preocupado.gif

Yes but with the exception of Characters, according to FAQ. You can encounter a Character on the Desert Space and you don't have to lose the Life because you don't encounter the space at all.

I know few people like this and neither do I, but these are the Rules As Written.

I know, but he was saying if there is already a card on the space, then you still lose a life.. right? even if you did not draw the card..

Yes, this is correct. If you encounter the Space (draw 1 card or encounter card face up) you lose a life immediately.
