I don't really like the idea of them though to be perfectly honest. I can't shake the feeling that someone was watching an episode of Star Trek and came up with these one-trick ponies. They smack of a seduction dance sequence aimed at Captain Kirk.
Probably an excuse to have scantily clad girls in comics.

Oddly enough, Star Trek had the Deltans, an empathic species with pheromones and a whole culture of expression through sex, yet that species also routinely took on vows of celibacy when interacting with other species of the Federation in order to avoid the spank factor.

Actually, the main ones featured in the old Marvel Star Wars comics were scantily clad men. There's an argument to be made that all spandex-clad superheroes are eroticism of some sort (for men, for women, for men who like men, etc.), but to be up front with male beefcake in the early 80s was kind of unheard of at the time. Dark Horse were the ones who made most of them women in crop-tops and bikinis.

There's a vast difference in HOW male and female superheroes are generally depicted, though. Usually, men are shown as dominant and powerful; they're the ones in control of their sexiness. Women are shown in submissive or openly sexual poses directed at the reader (as opposed to being sexy for their own benefit, the way men are depicted). Just consider the way female supers tend to have both their posterior and face turned to the reader at the same time on covers.

No argument here. My point was more that the male Zeltrons in Marvel Star Wars were unusual in that they were dressed in those sexualized outfits and put in those sexualized poses that were generally reserved for female characters. In other words, Marvel may have given us our first Star Wars characters designed to titillate women and gay male readers.

That picture kind of says it all. Regardless of the gender, this kind of thing just doesn't feel like the setting to me. I get it, you gotta make comics so you can sell them, and coming up with stuff that aligns with the setting is really hard and requires caution, but this is really like path of least responsibility storytelling in the setting. There is a lot of bad Star Wars stuff out there from the days when oversight was low and a profit was assured to anyone who could get a chop from Lucas and put the logo on their product.

To Archelyte's complaint, Stan makes a good point. Sexualized characters have been part of the franchise since at least ROTJ. Don't forget Oola was in that one, too. But, yeah — when a player creates a character to basically be a walking playmate, the GM is within their rights to say no thanks.

That the attractive young woman (who is one of only three or so female characters with speaking roles in the whole OT) is the only prominent character to be put on display for the audience like that is a whole other can of worms.

Exactly.
Besides, while Zeltrons might be among the low-hanging fruit in terms of that sort of character, there's other species that very easily fall into a similar category, those being female Twi'leks (the first ones we see are scantily-clad dancers), female Togruta (the Rule 34 crowd has apparently had a field day with Ahsoka from what little I've seen), and Falleen (who emit what amounts to date-**** pheromones, which is pretty dark stuff for a space opera setting).
Heck, any species could be used for that sort of character type; a friend of mine has some tales that are equal parts cringe-worthy and darkly funny about a male Devaronian Scoundrel that was essentially the Star Wars version of Doctor Who's jack Harkness (sans the immortality) that would make Lando either blush, hang his head in shame, or both. And another chap I knew through a few different RPG forums had a Wookiee gigolo as a PC who showed up in a few different systems (I don't think the character ever made it to the FFG system) and was apparently very successful at his chosen career path.
So it's less that Zeltrons are themselves a problem; I've seen a few Zeltron PCs in various games I've played in and run, and the only one of them that was essentially a scantily-clad libido on legs was due to the player wanting to be "edgy" and "shocking" in an effort to freak out the other players, and the GM very quickly told that player to either play a real character instead of a cheap caricature that nobody at the table wanted to deal with or he could find a different group to game with (he made a different character that while comic relief did so in a way that was actually entertaining and not the least bit creepy).
I've always liked Selkath.. I can't really explain why. Maybe I just feel bad about walking through that base and slaughtering them all.. (It was an accident, I swear.)

Same here... when I first saw a glimpse of a screenshot of an Abednedo, I was hoping they were actually Selkath, but after a double take noticed that they didn't quite resemble each other.
