The Inn, chapter 4, SPOILERS!!

By Daft Blazer, in The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth

Do not read if you’ve not played this scenario!!!!

Ok, on my first campaign, I failed this scenario, but I figured the spy must be the Dwarf.

So, onto my second campaign, I figured I’d just go right ahead and accuse the Dwarf on the first turn, sure enough, he was the spy! Somewhat disappointed if he is always the spy, as this puts a significant dent into playability. What are other players experiences?

Short answer - It's possible for any of the 3 suspects can be the spy. But if you know what clues to look for, you can determine which one it is very quickly.

I'll put this into spoiler tags since it covers most of the details of the scenario and explains exactly how they expected you to determine who the spy is.

One major thing I'll note outside the spoiler tags is that FFG software support confirmed to me that at least in v1.0.3 (and earlier) of the App, there is a bug which sometimes causes you to not receive the correct set of clues, making it actually impossible to deduce the spy. They claim this bug was fixed, presumably in v1.0.4, but I haven't tried to confirm or not.

There are 2 main bits of evidence you need. Each will eliminate one of the guests as the spy.

  • One of the 3 Terrain Features (The Statue, Bush, or Window) will eliminate one of the suspects
    • The Statue will sometimes have a clue that very clearly eliminates the Man (There is a tunnel under the statue that only a Dwarf/Hobbit could fit thru)
    • The Window will sometimes have a clue that very clearly eliminates the Dwarf (There is a loose bar in the window, but only a thin/small person could fit thru)
    • The Bush will sometimes have a clue that very clearly eliminates the Hobbit (I'm not sure what this actually says, because this is the bugged item that currently doesn't work correctly )
  • By talking to the guests at the Inn, all 3 guests will corroborate a particular person's story about how they got injured - which means that person is NOT the spy
    • The Dwarf claims he got injured while fighting a wolf. If the other 2 guests also mention this, then the Dwarf is not the spy.
    • The Hobbit claims to be injured taking a fall on a walk. If the other 2 guests also mention this, then the Hobbit is not the spy.
    • The Man claims to be injured falling off his Horse. If the other 2 guests also mention this, then the Man is not the spy.

However, FFG software support confirmed to me that, at least in v1.0.3 of the App (and earlier I assume), there is a bug which causes the Bush to never give the appropriate outcome (it always just gives you a note that a noisy bird lives in the bush and nobody could be using it to escape), so in this case it's actually impossible to determine which guest is the spy.

Same, I’m still in first campaign and I failed, I too think it was the Dwarf

I just played this adventure, it's the first one that I've won so far lol. The spy was NOT the dwarf.

The fact that the app switches it up is great news, gives the game much more replay value. Although I think Faranim is right, if you know what clues to look for, this is a very short adventure. Probably helped that I tested well though, there's some luck involved there.

Just a lucky guess then 😜

It was not the dwarf in my campaign.

too much spoiler revealing why it was not the dwarf. So, I removed it.

I think they fixed it by substituting the barrels for what was the bush clue?

In any case, there is sometimes a clue given by the barrels that the ale was poisoned, and this eliminates the hobbit because he's stated to be drinking the ale in his description. So I think they fixed it.

I'ved played this scenario 4 times now and the first time I actually got the wrong guy but still managed to win, so that surprised me but it was pretty cool at the same time. It's definitely possible to be any of three because it has been all three for me in various playthroughs. Although it's not that replayable because it's only two clues, there's still a bit of tension in whether or not you can pass the tests and avoid threat gain or damage. And I think one of the clues or search tokens gives a bonus lore.

You definitely got lucky lol.

I've played that scenario twice now: first time it wasn't the dwarf, second time it was

The suspense is killing me

EDIT; nevermind. I misread your statement.

Lol, I did the same thing Majushi. Your reply made me re-read Hiruma's.

When we played the pit eliminated man as a suspect. The Dwarf had injuries, bruising that he claimed he got from a wolf, we figured that a wolf would have scratched or bitten rather than bruise. The Hobbit had no injuries so that made it clear to us that the Dwarf had to be the spy. When we accused the Dwarf the orcs and thugs showed up to try and burn down the inn and everyone fled, it specifically mentioned that the hobbit left. We put out the fires and defeated the foes and won the scenario. However, we are still uncertain if the Dwarf was the spy and fled when the enemy attacked, or if the Hobbit was the spy.

If the app specifically mentioned the hobbit fleeing, it probably was the hobbit.

This scenario is very vague on the answers. There is only one hint as to who the culprit could be and it is up to interpretation too. I had one where we had a choice between a dwarf who was annoyed at the tall man's inability to be polite riding his horse and looked anxious. My group thought it was the the tall man because he had done something terrible and was jittery. Turns out that we should have taken it the tall man was incompetent at horse riding and the dwarf being the only one without much a story was the culprit.

The other was that everyone seemed fine, except the tall man bought the eglantine salve from us. He does this in the previous scenario I described. At least this time, it was the tall man because no one else had anything to go off of. The Dwarf was talking about fighting a wolf and the Hobbit was making fun of him for overly embellishing the story.

In ours it was the tall man, because he was a smoker.

I kid you not

Third run through of this scenario, and guess what, - it was the Dwarf AGAIN!!! Three times in a row 🤪 🤪 🤪

Have you considered to fill some lottery cupongs lately ;)
