Suggestions for Starting Ships

By Noahjam325, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So next Saturday in going to be in a new Star Wars game that utilizes all of the splat books. We've selected the starship as our group resource and now just have to pick one. I was looking for some help in picking a ship as there are a ton of options.

Most of our games have had the players select either the YT-1300 or Sorosub Luxury Yacht. So I was looking for what other people recommend. It just has to have room for at least 6 players.

With 6 players, I'd probably lean toward the Ghtroc 720 Light Freighter or YT-2400 Light Freighter as I'd like to have room for at least a few passengers. I think the YT is probably a better ship overall, but the Ghtroc offers the ability to carry six passengers instead of the YT's two.

What kind of group identity do you have? A group of explorers head different needs than a team of bounty hunters or a group of smugglers.

Currently it's a pretty even mix. We've got the hot shot pilot, force sensitive naturalist, bounty hunter/gadgeteer, force sensitive mystic healer, mandalorian, and a force sensitive version as the Thomas Wayne version of Batman.

So why are they flying around the galaxy together?

Currently the GM has just given us the "you've all been given a job" explanation for the game. Session 0 is this Saturday and we're going to go into more detail then. But from what I've seen of the other players so far; I think something with a lot of cargo space and room to customize.

Hmmm not a lot to go with but.

I'm unique (with my player group) but I do like a YT-1300. It's a cargo ship with lots of room for customization.

The YT-2400 is a bit smaller but up gunned when compared to the -1300. If you are spoiling for a fight, I'd recommend the Duce 'n Four, especially if you can upgrade the cannons to Heavy Lasers.

My characters have settled with a VCX-100 and they really like it. It's got plenty of cargo space, adequate weapons and can be customized a bit. It's also a ship layout that players are familiar and comfortable with. Plus it's got the option of a mounted shuttle. Also, note that I classify the VCX-100 as a Sil 4 ship in my campaign (which makes it a better fit with the FFG starship combat rules).

Try the kst-100 from dawn of rebellion

I hope the 6 person party on a Sil 3* ship are best friends, 'cause they're about to be a whole lot closer...

2 of them, pilot&copilot have to be best friends, everyone else gets their own room.

I'm well aware of its TARDIS-esque properties. Hence the:

If a U-wing is Sil 4, there's no way that something with 4 staterooms, a lounge/galley, an engineering station and a cockpit (seating 2?) is Sil 3.

@Noahjam325 I'd second the Ghtroc. It's slow, but it's sturdy (because it's a space turtle), and appropriately sized for your group. (Enter the Unknown)

Another popular ship for larger parties is the Wayfarer, but since you have a pilot, that may not be as much fun for them (you lose many of the fun maneuvers between Sil 4 and 5). (EoTE Core)

If you like YT but are tired of the 1300, I have a personal fondness for the YT-2000, but that's more to do with the Otana (XWing:Alliance) than anything game mechanics related. (Fly Casual)

Finally, if you're not hauling cargo, I really like the Loronar E9 Explorer. Tougher, better sensors, and better hyperdrive than a stock YT, enough hp to customize, bonus to mechanics checks (if I recall correctly, I'm away from book). (Enter the Unknown)

Uwing should be sil3 and I'd say the kst-100 should barely be sil 4.

Thanks for everyone's input. The Loroner and Ghtroc both look really interesting. I also found some very well drawn and detailed deck plans for both. I'm going to present them as my suggestions for the group's ship.
