Gotta say, I turned up my nose that these little not-arc guys but I've grown fond of em. Their design is weird/goofy enough that they appeal to me, plus if a ship's gotta burn down to concentrated fire I'd rather it be a torrent than an arc...

[Another idea:] Ashoka (Delta + r2), Anti-floater, 3 Gold Squadron Scrubbies (Wolfe = 2 gold squadrons + 1 point)

but yeah, I really like the little guy. He's what I wish the Z-95 was, ie something that doesn't asplode like a TIE but which also...does things (like barrel-roll)

Pilots: Oddball and Blue Squadron Protectors

En masse it's terrifying in the range 1-2 bracket.

Torrents feel like one of the first great "cannon fodder" ships in X-Wing. On a TIE Fighter a lot of the cost cost is in their dial, same for the Z-95 which also has a reduction due to a weak action bar. A Torrent's dial is weak enough to justify a lower point cost, which means their value in terms of raw statline and actions is better than equivalent ships in other factions. Evade + 5 HP is just better per point at tanking than the other ships.

Their value as blockers is a bit weaker than TIEs, but probably at least as good as Z-95s, due to their red Barrel Roll. But in terms of raw "getting-shot-at" value, I don't think there's a better ship than a Torrent. If they're doing their job (dying well), their dial doesn't need to be good.

I also keep being tempted by Tucker. A free focus if a friendly ship at 1-2 attacks anything in your firing arc? That's not bad. Best is probably just to run him with nothing like a Gold, but consider the list:

  • Mace Windu (R2, Delta 7B, Synchronized Console) 68
  • Tucker (Concussion Missiles, SynCon) 39
  • Anakin Skywalker (R2, Delta 7B, SynCon) 84
    • Total 191, bid 9
  • The premise is that someone will probably be able to pass a lock to Tucker, who then has 3 dice with Focus/Lock, after having only taken an Evade action 3 red, 2 green, 5 HP with an Evade token isn't a bad statline for 39 points on paper. Almost surely not worth it on table, but the biggest reason for the list is to get SynCon on both Mace and Anakin, and also still have a somewhat decent bid. Basically, Tucker is holding the slot for an eventual N-1

As to a list with the same ships, the one which just game to mind to me was to drop to generic 104th ARCs, in order to afford Anakin. Anakin (Delta + R2), 104th, 104th, Gold Squaddie, 9 point bid. Anakin is a fun ace, and this seems like it'd be a decent slab of beef to assist him.

My current go-to list is two naked Gold Squadron Torrents, two naked 104th Arcs and a nippy little Obi-Wan. I call it Obeef-Wan Kenobi.

I want to believe in the V-19 Torrent.

What amazes me is how steep the cost bump is as you ascend in Initiative. It's 13 points to go from a Goldie to Oddball, whose ability is shockingly bad. For comparison, it's 11 points to go from a basic Ini 2 X-wing to Wedge, who brings one of the game's best pilot abilities.

It's 13 points to go from a Fringer to Han Solo, or from a Scimitar to Jonus. What the hey. It's 13 points from a Bandit to Cracken, but that's to get a pseudo-coordinate ability, not Oddball's nonsense.

All of which is to say: naked Goldies or bust.

Not bad, that might be a decent list.

It's ok. The Arcs go down hard so you need to make sure the Torrents present the juicier target first in order to get the full value out of the Arcs' red dice.

It's 7 points, so it'd cut you from 8 ships to 7 if you want to equip half the squad (3/7) with them, or 6 if you want to equip everyone with them, but the interaction between Homing Missiles and Synchronised Console sounds quite nasty.

The homing missile-consol synergy is there for sure. Deploy in a block with the homing missile carriers at the back, move into range, take a tl with the missile carriers. Fire off the homing missiles then pass the locks forward for a focus TL shot from the front guys.

This is the list I flew on release day for wave 3. I used it against a list that had (I don’t remember the exact list) something along the lines of 2 black squadron aces for resistance, L’ulo L’amapar, and another pilot I forget. I also don’t remember the upgrades (sorry about that). But I do remember the torrents getting these very fun attacks against both of the T-70s’. One actually went down after only one round due to fire from both torrents and Ahsoka. I won that match by a sizable margin and wanted to share this very fun list. While i do like where you are going with 5 Juke, cluster missile torrents. Why munitions failsafe? Cluster missiles already has 4 charges.

Unsure if mentioned, but so far the Torrent is ironically the only ship that gets much mileage out of battle meditation

When they're too far to targetlock, you can coordinate to focus + evade. When close enough, lock away!

Pity there aren't many/any missiles worth a ****
