Out of monsters hooray!

By Adamquest64, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I didn't have any luck doing a search on this topic: I own only base game monsters and there have been games in which I run out of monster tokens and the monster cup is empty. Usually when the terror track is at 10 and The Terrible Experiment has ended in failure. During these times, I simply don't add any more monsters to the board during a monster surge.

I witnessed a particularly odd game yesterday that my friends were playing. They had an empty monster cup and were trying to to kill all the monsters on the board. My one friend ended up with 20 monster trophies. They were refusing to trade them in for things because they didn't want them to go into the cup. I pointed out to them that I considered them cheaters because they were exploiting a weakness in the game (not enough monsters included in base game. Sorry but its true.).

Was I correct in this? Is this cheating? what should happen when the monsters run out?

Btw, my friends still got murdered by Hastur despite their antics.

If a monster should be drawn from the cup but the cup is empty, the ancient one immediately awakens.

Kroen's right. Tell your buddies to look at page 20 in the instruction book.

Uh... oh yeah... so there it is. Well chaps, its been real. Thanks for the info.

Also let me add that with all expansions there are around 150 monsters in the cup so this can never happen

Sounds like a challenge to me!

Ain't gonna happen, even with 10 investigators.

Play just base board, with base game Mythos (but use everything else from expansions). After you seal a few of the high-freq locations, you can let monster surges happen indefinately, GOO won't be waking up from doom track, nor from too many gates open. Throw in Summon Monster and you can just sit back and take down monsters till the cup runs out. Only thing throwing curveballs are Rumors, but could just hope for Terrible Experiment and let it bounce other Rumors.

good luck

If you really do use everything from the expansions, you've got "add 2 doom token" Mythos cards to worry about, as well as "The Next Act Begins" (the former is much more of a problem than the latter).

If you're using everything from all expansions, the Next Act Begins cards are actually a relief. No gate, no doom tokens, and a free clue! You'd never bother to mitigate them because they're so rare that drawing three would be a complete fluke. Not that I enjoy that aspect, but thought I'd let you know that a full-expansion foray isn't all bad.

::Shrug:: or you could just use Jaqueline to bounce the other rumors. People didn't get perfect scores on the league games because it was impossible. It's actually quite easy if you can pre-your investigators and are willing to have a boring game while manipulating the board (i.e. fully exploiting Darrell, and Daisy).

And the act cards are definitely like free turns now.
