Which ruleset do you use as your "base" rules?

By Blustar, in Rogue Trader

What I mean is a I want to start a Scifi campaign but I'm not sure which ruleset to use, Dark Heresy (which I have a ton of books) or Rogue Trader ( I'm missing Lure of the Expanse), I know they have different settings and themes but which ruleset is a better base to build from and add rules?

I mean is it easier to start with RT and add rules from DH or the other way around? or Do you have to keep the rulesets separate?

thanks

Really RT is just DH with errata. The main difference is the psykers rules.

The other big difference is how you obtain equipment. RT has an abstract aquasition system, DH buys things directly with currancy.

Unless of course you use Ascension, in which case it's very similar to RT's acquisition system.

So starting with RT and then adding elements from DH seems like a reasonable approach? I guess I'll just have to dig in...

thanks

If you want more of a Aliens, Bladerunner, Total Recall feel use DH.

For Star Wars or Dune use RT.

I use all of it for my game. Not all at once, mind you, but it is all there.

I don't really like the Psyker rules in RT other than the fettered/unfettered/push option though. I would be gleeful to get my hands on at least semi-official Astropath and Navigator rules using the DH model.

I thought I would greatly prefer RT, then i got pulled in by the larger number of products currently out for DH. Ascension was what really pulled me to DH, but I've since become very disenchanted with the balance issues of that product, especially in the psyker stuff, so I've found myself going back towards RT for a power level neatly between the two.

BTW, I don't feel the two games are very cross compatible d/t the increased XP cost of almost all advances for RT professions.

For Rogue Trader, I'm using Rogue Trader as a base but pulling a few things in from Dark Heresy (mostly equipment). I restricted classes to RT ones as it's my first RT campaign. I prefer the tweaks to combat in RT, such as called shots not being automatically the best option and substituting number of successes for a damage die.

By the time I get around to running Ascension, I'm thinking of using RT as a base but keeping the psyker rules from DH. A mixed party could be very interesting but I'd have to decide how to pull RT classes into DH.
