[Blog] - X-Wing Storage Solutions

By unfassbarnathan, in X-Wing

Groovy! I fully agree on the use of those cheap cardboard boxes for storing cards - they are fantastic. I've got my star realms cards in one of them.

I also encourage everyone to recycle as much as possible when creating a storage solution. I'm using two two mobile-phone boxes (Moto G 5+) to hold my cards, as they are just the right size and open the same way as the boxes used by OP. For dials, I'm using three aluminium foil boxes (one for each faction). Baseplates go in a flatter box which I got in the mail, and I've glued in cardboard dividers (made from conversion kit packaging) to hold the different baseplates in place. These all fit conveniently into a larger cardboard box with a magnetised lid that I had leftover from a hamper.

Finally, I store my large ships in a bosch drill case which someone was throwing out. I cut all the internal plastic dividers out and filled it with foam that I found lying about at uni.

For small ships ships and travelling to game stores I use two of these (mine are cheaper off-brand versions). The tubs are great for holding cards, tokens, and ships, and I've removed some tubs to make room to hold large ships, templates, and so on.

tl;dr recycle, and alfoil boxes are great for dials

Wow, yes. Aluminium foil type boxes sound perfect for dial storage! And I agree, recycling is ideal

They are perfect for a single conversion kit with a little extra space. I have some bits of chopped up toilet roll that I use to fill in the remaining space so the dials don't all fall over

I use egg cartons. Perfect for most small and medium ships. Also for tokens.

Plano tackle cases are perfect for small and medium sized ships and tokens, and small-base cardboard, and can be easily sized to accommodate most of them. I have two other larger plastic toolboxes to store big ships in, and a heavily modified tackle case that I use to store active lists and all the tokens, terrain, dice, movement templates and other paraphernalia I need for transport to play games. The only ships that leave my house tend to be the ones that I play.

I keep mine in a floating dumpster on fire.

I can't get my storage dumpster to float. Where did you find yours?

I've got a pair of plastic cases which I store my small base fighters, plus their base plates and dials (one for Empire/FO, one for Rebel/Resistance). I've also got several Feldherr foam pieces holding particular medium/large base ships, which are rotated into my carry case as required. For card storage, a folder holds copies of the upgrade cards, and I've got two deck holders which contain my Rebel/Empire pilot cards, with the Resistance/Republic pilots being bagged and stored in my 2.0 Core box (which also holds the vast number of generic duplicate upgrades).

I’ve switched up my storage a little bit for 2E. Ships and baseplates still go in my 3 heavily reconfigured two-layer red-and-clear Plano cases (the ones that were popular toward the beginning of 1E). I used to keep the dials with the ships as well, but to save space I’ve moved them out to some beautiful empty Magic “From The Vault” boxes that I (mostly) found cheap at my FLGS; these are notable for having both a flip-top where I can drop in dials I’m done with, and a little slide-out drawer with a magnetized cover for when I need to dig around and prep for a game. Upgrade cards get sorted by type and stuck in individual old empty Magic The Gathering card boxes from the FLGS, which then in turn go in old empty Magic “Fat Pack” boxes (also from the FLGS). Pilot cards get a similar treatment. And everything but the Planos fits inside a very reasonably-sized lidless cardboard box (regrettably my only legit recycled component).

For games in 2E, m y goal was to be able to fit absolutely everything I needed for a game into one case, and for setup/tear down to be FAST. So I picked up a bright blue plastic tackle box with 2 trays that rise up from the main body when flipped open. The upper trays have dividers that let me fit all my templates sorted by speed, except for the 4-speed and 5-speed that have to bunk together with the 2-range, and the 3-range that only really fits at the bottom. There’s a slightly bigger space in the middle of the top tray where I have my damage deck in a little holder for easy access during the game, and this rests just on top of my obstacles. Dice and a token holder are also all right there on the first or second tray respectively. A separate small box down below holds bomb tokens, loose cargo, and spare parts. I also keep it stocked with enough bases and pegs for most lists. Plenty of room for ships in the bottom as well.

Now all I need is to get more games in with this fanciness!!

It hurts me to see ships mashed together like that 🤪

Just invested (substantially) in a Feldherr maxi bag and all applicable foam trays for my collection. Not sure how it'll work out in practice but foam seems ideal.

Reason is that the tool boxes I've been using have actually led to some cannons almost broken off. Hoping foam tells a different story, but unsure as yet.

Shipping from Germany just takes so long...

My stuff is only semi-sorted. I need to find a better solution for my dials, which are currently tucked into the corners of all my other storage boxes. No rhyme or reason.

I'm sure you'll love it! I did the same a year or so ago, and my only regret was not getting it sooner. I can fit a complete (meaning I'm able to play every list archetype) empire, fo and cis collection, all cards and template tray, and just bring everything for casual evenings.

Never had anything break, and it's been thrown down stairs and stumbled over.

Now I'm considering getting a mini bag to take to tournaments...

You keep your ships in the forums?
