Looking for Inspiration: What does Virgilia (I-18) Export?

By Mark Caliber, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi I'm a GM and I'm looking for color for my campaign. I'm studying the know systems in the I-18 sector and I think that I can use Virgillia for my AoR style campaign. But the PC's should head in under cover as just another group of Free Traders.

And that begs the question, "Why do merchants go to Virgillia?" What do they want and what can they offer?

I know that they are a fairly technologically advanced society, maybe not quite up to par with the Core worlds, but they've been in business for a couple of millennia. They have a small aristocracy that holds all of the wealth and hold a larger poorer population in sway.

I'm ruling out being an Agra-world or Agricultural exporter.

Okay, I'm heading out to play X-Wing this evening and I'll noodle this out over, but I'm hoping someone will have that flash or brilliance that currently evades me.

Checking Wookieepedia and it doesn't seem like there's much of anything to say about the planet, which makes it perfect for a "I'll make up whatever I want to" for it's exports.

Every place needs common place and luxury items. Food, clothing, jewelry, books, medicine, exotic pets, building materials. While it may not be an agra-world, importing nerfs for local consumption wouldn't be out of line. They could also export any of that stuff along with raw goods like ore, chemicals, etc that are intended to be processed somewhere else.

OK, then look at the structure in place...

Small upper class, large lower class. Primary resource: Cheap Labor.

They import raw materials and components, export finished goods and components. Everything from Speeders, to starship seats, to Biscuit Baron Smileymeal toys. Emphasis on things that class 5 droids aren't bright enough to deal with, like working with irregular materials, or assembly of fine components that need a little finesse but not necessarily precision.

Space tobacco, or something like it. This is basically just Virginia, in the not-so-distant past. Maybe throw in a lingering Duelling custom, like that on Corellia, for flavor.

edit: missed the anti-agri bit.

This is what I've come up with so far.

  • Custom mass produced Advanced Ceramics
  • Printed Circuit Boards (another "Advanced Ceramics" component).
  • Virgilian Iron Wood. (limited quantities with low demand).

My assumption is that Virgilia is a fairly self sufficient world. They don't need much in the way of inports, but the Aristocracy is bringing in high end use items not available from Virgilian's industry.

The ceramics are produced inexpensively enough and at a comparable quality that they are able to export these in quantity. Basically Virgilia has sufficient clay and advanced metalics. The lower class population would be concentrated around the initial acquisition and processing of the raw materials while the upper class advanced engineers with advanced skills run the highly automated production facilities.

I'm also thinking of tying in Sump to Virgilia's economy. Essentially Virgilia picked up where the Republic dropped the ball 50 years ago. Virgilia delivers the essential food products that Sump needs in exchange for glowy rocks and the noxious black goo that plagues the swamps of Sump. (Radioactives & Petrochems).

And I'm seeing an almost identical issue with Lipsec (which is one world further down the same hyper lane), but since the PC's aren't headed in that direction I can shelve that decision . . . for the time being. But it could also be an interesting backdrop for the current adventure.

I'll keep puzzling through this section of space as the adventure unfolds. But I'm still open to suggestions.

Funny to hear about Sump, as the Nuknog are the species that I’m currently adding to the CSG. What are the odds?
