getting into the game

By kujoe1988, in Star Wars: Legion

Hi all, I am just now taking the dive into Legion... going to be all rebels until clone wars come out... what units and commanders are doing well... what does the "meta' look like. what until should I buy/avoid. Any other tips about all thing legion. I appreciate your responses!

I almost recommend waiting until Clone Wars if you really want all in there.

Otherwise? Meta is wide wide open in legion. At Adepticon every single unit except one was represented.

I think your best choice is to buy 2x core sets (ideally if you can sell or trade away the empire you don’t want). If you can’t find anyone to take the empire off your hands, I suppose you can get by with a single core set.

After that, Leia is the only “must have”. The rest you can tailor to fit what you want. The double core set has enough basic troopers you’re all set (and you’ll want other trooper variants instead for any additional). Add commandos, other corps units, and support to taste.

Or buy Han and Chewie if you like them.

The only thing to forget about is the t47. Just don’t. It’s a point sink.

Two core sets and your favorite looking hero (Leia, Chewie, generic officer) is the way to begin. You need a 3rd corps unit and more dice anyway. So even if you can’t sell your Imperials and spare Luke, a second core set makes a ton of sense: free rulers and barricades. If you can eBay or otherwise sell the unwanted minis a second core set is like free money.

so get 2X t-47 they look nice on the shelf but other then that everything has a use i personally went 3 cores but that because i split with someone and there was not unit out at the start must have for me are fleets and commandos and Leia.

thanks for the responses... sad to her about the T-47 as it is one of my favorite ships in star wars... so besides leia and commandos any other must haves... I was reading about the pathfinders... are they worth picking up?

Go with Fleet Troopers over the Pathfinders. As another new player it sounds like the Pathfinders are right behind the T-47, too expensive for what they do and you can have the Fleet Troopers do the same for less - or at least IIRC that is the jest. I will say this, but what you like. If you are wanting to get really competitive you will be buying all and multiples anyway, but for a new or casual player, buy what you like.

If you want a T-47 or two for fun just keep an eye out for deals. I've seen them as low as $9 new, at Black Friday. Even if it's not gonna win much, when you're first getting armies together for games you can't go wrong with 200 points for $9! Personally I suspect it WOULD be much more useful in Grand Alliance games, which may be more what the designers balanced the big vehicles for. Most people don't play Grand Alliance though. If you do, then things with a good dollars to points exchange rate will be handy for getting your full 1600 points regardless of effectiveness.

Don't forget a 3rd Corps with a capital "C" is required. Commandos and Pathfinders aren't Corps and won't get you a legal army at this stage in your collecting. Fleet Troopers or a second starter set will. If you're balking at the price of a second starter, don't worry you can sell the spare Luke and Darth for $10 each easily, and the 3 imperial squads will sell for another $10 each. So that's about $40 bucks back after eBay/paypal fees. Then you gotta figure the $35 you'd have spent to get a 3rd Corps unit, and the $15 you'd eventually spend on more dice (trust me, you will), the 4th rebel squad and second AT-RT is FREE! You can usually sell your second core set counters and command cards for a couple bucks too. Barricades are not worth reselling in my experience.

As much as I love the brick and mortar stores, Fantasy Flight themselves sell the SW:L core sets on Amazon for $71, free shipping. With that price the second core set is even more of a steal.
