Comics Guidance

By The_Real_Gundy, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Looking for guidance on what comics to look for that feature some of the ships and/or characters found in TMG. Delving into the world of SW comics media is pretty daunting. If any community would be able to help put me on some good vectors, you guys are it, I have no doubts. 😊

@The_Real_Gundy by TMG do you mean the miniatures game?

I haven't been as up to date on the comics but was reading them earlier on in the Marvel run and before but I know I've heard repeatedly that the main Star Wars series, Vader, Poe Dameron, and the Lando mini-series are all quite good in the new Marvel stuff.

I'd suggest picking a character you want to know more about and seeing if they are known to be featured in any comics and maybe work through that series. This could apply to canon or legends characters, really.

For instance, if you wanted to know more about Soontir Fel, he appears first in the Rogue Squadron comics from Dark Horse comics and that series also has some other notable pilots from the TMG in it.

If you wanted to know more about Kanan Jarrus, there's the Marvel comic featuring him. This is just another example.

Dark Horse's Rogue Squadron and Marvel's Poe Dameron seem like the place to get the most pilots, though you might want to dip into some of the related comics as well.

If you just want pictures of ships the comics aren't the best place for that. There are ships of course but most of the time ships just get our characters places. If you want to read the new canon comics here is a not brief overview.

The Poe Dameron title has the most characters (who aren't Luke and Han Solo and Rey) that have pilots in the game in the story in my opinion. I also think of it as having the most dogfights. It was okay when they are on their missions and such but it really suffers from the threadbare setup of Force Awakens. The stories always sort of go ker-klunk or trip over themselves a bit or get convoluted when they need to put missions into broader context since they are prequels to Force Awakens. It has ended its run. Pleasant enough to my surprise as someone who despises the two sequel films but still reinforces my opinion of them. This is my guess to be most like what you're looking for.

The main Star Wars book is pretty good and I recommend it if you want to read Star Wars comics in the new canon. It is still ongoing. Obviously it has the main characters in it. There are also a couple of crossover stories. One is with the first Darth Vader (Vader Down) run and one is with the Doctor Aphra (The Screaming Citadel) comic. All of the mini-series titled by a character (Leia or Lando or Han Solo (best mini)) set in the Original Trilogy Era pretty much tie back to this main title. I think this has been the strongest book.

Darth Vader has had two titles. They are both good. The first run also gives us Doctor Aphra who ended up with her own title. If you're picking these up be careful to get the books in the right order without mixing up the two runs. The first run (written by Kieron Gillen) is concurrent with the main Star Wars title. The second run (Soule as writer to start) leans a bit more prequel to Star Wars.

If you're going to read just one comic (and by read I mean get collected editions) get the main Star Wars comic with Vader Down and Screaming Citadel as chronologically appropriate.

If you're going to do two get the first run of Darth Vader as your second.

Alternately for two the first Darth Vader (also with Vader Down ) and then the Doctor Aphra (also with Screaming Citadel ) book. You can read Doctor Aphra on her own but she starts out in the first Vader run and that stuff matters to her solo book.

I haven't quite read everything in current Star Wars canon comics but I'm pretty close.

This is good advice as well.

If you want to go "Legends" The Rogue Squadron comics are in my opinion the strongest from when Dark Horse had the license. Marvel has bound them and re-printed them in two Epic Collections with the tie-in stuff included. The first part of that series is in Volume 2 of "The New Republic" Epic Collections with the rest of the run being in Volume 3 .

Those Epic Collections are good value and are very complete.

If there is any "must read" stuff for Star Wars miniature game I'd put the Rogue Squadron novels and comics at the top of the list. The Rogue Squadron novels are some of the best EU books.

If you enjoy the Rebels animated series the Kanan series was a nice read.
