Monster Limits and Mythos-Card effects?

By A. Harbinger, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Greetings, I just registered here, because I have an urgent question to which I haven't found an answer anywhere yet. It concerns the Mythos-Card effect when some monsters are placed on a street-location because of a headline. Do they count against the Monster Limit and are therefore placed on the outskirts, if the town is already "full"? I hope someone can clarify that, thanks in advance anyway :-D

Yes, they count. Only the special expansion type Spawn monsters don't count against the limit. Also, expansion boards don't have monster limits. But aside from these two things, if an effect puts a monster into Arkham, it is subject to the monster limit.

Hm, okay, it's understandable from a balancing-point-of-view, but I find it a bit sad concerning role playing issues. Has anyone here ever tried to ignore this rule in this special case and can tell how it would "mess up" the gameplay?

A lot of people ignored the rule with regards to certain Dark Pharaoh mythos cards, but the effect was essentially the same as the base game's.

The only problem I can think of is, at what point, if at all, do you retroactively apply the monster limit? That is, if you ignore it for these couple monsters, and then later you have to add more monsters to the board that would go above the limit, what would the limit then be? Would you have to continually raise it to accommodate these monsters? Would killing these monsters then lower the limit again?

There are just too many confusing scenarios to allow that. My suggestion would be to make sure that the number of monsters on the board never approaches the limit, by making the effort to clear up those already out. Even though from a role-playing standpoint it doesn't make sense to place those monsters elsewhere, there are already tons of monsters you need to worry about.

Hm, my take on the problem you mentioned would be not to change the Monster Limit at all, but to keep it at whatever point it was all along. I don't find the right words at the moment so let me try to clarify it with an example.

We have four players so the Monster Limit is at seven and there are seven monsters roaming the city right now. Then a Mythos Card unleashes two new monsters on whatever street region, so we have nine monsters and still a limit of seven. The next round no monster is killed, a new one appears and goes to the outskirts. The round after that two monsters are killed and still the appearing monsters will go to the outskirts. I guess it wouldn't make that much of a difference, it would just make it harder to fall back under the monster limit once loads of monsters start popping up by Mythos Card events. During the game I played yesterday this didn't happen but I think I'll try it out the next time it's possible and give a feedback here gui%C3%B1o.gif
