This. Ultimately, you're the one setting the manouvring problem, turning to your opponent and saying "solve that one, then."

Anything you can do to make their job harder, is better.

This. Again.

I've been told I'm very unpredictable and it boils down to doing exactly this. I have an abhorrence for taking the obvious best move. Being unpredictable and good is clearly a very fine art, I'm certainly not there yet.

I often pull something unexpected that upsets my opponents plans for a turn or 2. But equally, I often put myself in a spot that screws me up for those couple turns as well and if it's not back to square 1, it can easily be worse.

I am getting better at looking ahead though, and that's key. If you're going to do a less optimal move in order to confound your opponent, you really need to map out your follow up options 1st.

Say a 2 hard left will put you in a good spot that turn, for a trade of shots, and opens up a K-turn to follow, but the ace then has options that will make the K-turn less great, and your stress from the K has limited you on the turn after that.

A 2 hard right and roll for cover may mean you take an unanswered shot, but maybe gives you multiple turn options in open space, while the ace may have obstacles or board edges blocking his chase/bail options, making him easier to predict and pin down.

Fighting aces with lower Init ships is a potentially long game, the clock becomes their best friend and your worst enemy, so it's necessary to surprise them and turn things around quickly.

That's my other saying, "Figure out where your opponent wants you to be and don't go there ."

This can largely apply to the game as a whole, though, not just aces.

What app/website did you use to make the map/ship/arc images?
