Naming Some Clones

By Underachiever599, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm currently about a quarter of the way through a Clone Wars campaign, and we've recently introduced two new players. One of them is playing a Clone Trooper, specifically an ARC Trooper Captain. At this point, the players have mostly been going on covert missions, reconnaissance, or investigating events that were only tangentially related to the actual war itself. However, with two characters playing Jedi, one about to be promoted into the rank of a Knight (and subsequently becoming a Jedi General), and an ARC Trooper, I figure now is as good a time as any to dive into the actual nitty gritty of the Clone Wars proper. In the next session or two, the players will be experiencing their first large scale combat.

With this upcoming large scale combat, I thought it would be fun to finally bring in a Clone Legion (the 135th) for the players to fight alongside. Naturally, the Jedi player's Jedi Master (A Cerean historian) is the current general of the legion, and the first Jedi player is currently the commander. With the introduction of the Clone player, we now have a captain for the legion as well. Now that we're diving into a large scale battle, I figured this is as good a time as any to introduce more Clone NPCs and give more personality to the 135th for the players to connect to. This gives the characters a few underlings to send on side tasks while the party meets the main objectives of whatever missions they go on, and some decent back-up when the players are put in a tight spot.

At the moment, I have eight Clone Trooper "Rivals" statted out, with a bit of personally for each. I've got some temp names on each of them, however I'm really not satisfied with a couple of the names. I've never been great at coming up with names. I'll confess, I rely very heavily on random name generators for a lot of characters. But I wanted to give each of these Clones a more personal touch for this campaign, so hopefully my players will bond to the characters more (Which will make it that much more traumatic when these random NPCs suddenly wind up dead due to dumb luck or poor planning).

The four names in bold are the ones I'm most lukewarm about. Swoop is the party's light vehicles expert. He's typically going to be a scout and light cavalry in combat. I've been struggling to come up with a good name, and hence, a good personality (due to how heavily Clone names are typically tied to the Clone's traits). Likewise, Deadeye has a pretty straightforward name for a sniper character. Originally, he was going to be called Longshot, until I renamed the group's heavy to Bigshot. While I can come up with a fitting personality for either name, I still feel like Deadeye is just too cliche of a name. That said, I can't think up a good alternative. Hawk and Spanner are the two most additions, and I'm not at all satisfied with either of them. Hawk is supposed to be a rather by-the-books pilot, to contrast Lieutenant Graze, a more daredevil-type. As for Spanner, he's more of a gunner/mechanic than an actual pilot, who constantly stresses over how often Graze damages his ships during risky maneuvers.

With all that said, I'm looking for suggestions for new names to give these four clones in particular. And hey, if you have other cool suggestions for new Clones, run 'em by me! I'm planning on having a relatively full cast of Clone NPCs for the players to interact with depending on the mission, and when one clone dies, there's always going to be a need for replacements!

Looks like good names for Clones to me. Clone names might key of their serial number, their role in the squad or be something simple 3 to 6 letter name or a personal nickname given to them by an outsider.

CT-2022 - Crasher

He's an expert at light vehicle's but he wasn't always. Early on in his career he had his fair share of incidents but always managed to walk away from it and learn from it. It's made him a better scout and the name just stuck.

CT-1784 - Needle

It may not sound like an impressive name for a sniper but not only can he find the needle in a haystack at 2 clicks, he can 'thread the needle" with a shot at that range as well.

I don't have anything for Hawk or Spanner but will edit the post if anything comes to mind.

I think your names are about as good as any we’ve heard from canon. The clones aren't exactly a creative bunch, ya know?

I have an ex-ARC Trooper in my current game, and while we were brainstorming his character originally, we came up with some extra names that may be handy to you. On top of that, we had a brainstorming session for code names for some non-clone characters that might help out.

Swoop: Hitch, Skipper, Jock, Nuna

Deadeye: Gazer, Scope, Hunter, Rider

Hawk: Reggie (Regulation Manual), Root, Header

Spanner: Fret, Greaser, Archer

Others: Talon, Node, Wink, Bull, Cutter

Hope those help!

I like Reggie, that's a good sample of how nicknames are sometimes chosen. It reminds me of the movie, A Midnight Clear, where the lead guy is named Will Knott and his platoon decided to give him the name 'Won't'

Clone names can be tied to other elements also.

Numbers play a big part. RC-1207 is called Sev. Sev is short for Seven, the last number of his id. Fives or CT-5555 is a pretty obvious one. Niner, Forr, Forry are some more examples of this type of naming scheme. CT-4321 might be called Countdown. I can only imagine what CT-6969 was called.

Non-pop culture can be a reference also...and it doesn't need to make sense, just sound cool. A clone medic could be called Hawkeye or Trapper for instance (referring to MASH characters). CT-5309 could be called Jenny

Animal names are common. Wolf, Fox, Hawk, Bear. They could be named after animals they like, or maybe a design on their armor/weapon/ship looked like that animal, or maybe they have some defining characteristic. Bear could be an exceptionally strong or large clone. Fox might be a very cunning one. Hawk might have really good agility. Owl might have high wisdom. Wolf might be more a maverick that goes solo a lot.

Events can be name related too. The planet, system, or city where the clone was distinguished in battle. A clone that is the lone survivor of several major battles might be named Survivor, or Lucky.

I could see Jedi just naming clones for easy reference also. Naming them after fallen Jedi, or old friends, or people they remind them of...so very basic stuff like Jason even works.

You can also use Mandalorian names for them.

Don’t forget hairstyles.

I wanted to list some more examples so people can use them for ideas.

Rex is from Recon EXpert. Hevy was a heavy weapons expert. Echo tended to repeat orders. Droidbait got shot a lot. Fixer was a mechanic. Boss was a unit leader. Dogma was intensely loyal and never questioned orders. Ace was a pilot.

Personality ones work well if you already have a character concept. Does you clone barely ever talks, but when he does it's words of wisdom? Monk. Does your clone take risks and like to gamble? Wild Card. Got a guy that won't shut up? Chatter or Chatterbox.

Found a great list to use if anyone wants:
