Krennic tactics and general army building

By Alan Noir, in Army Building

We've played Krennic twice now (with Boba in 500 point army) and he sems to go down very easily. We dont have Deathtroopers yet, so are we missing a trick or is he reliant on deathtroopers to be any use?

Also for army building, it seems like the rules want you to have a list in place before any of the battlefield, terrain and victory conditions are defined. This being the case does this incur situations where a potential list could be useless depending on the game parameters itself? Is there any wiggle room after setup or your opponents list being revealed? We dont play competitively, just at home so usually allow flexibility. Ie say you turned up with an ion heavy army list that was upgraded to deal with difficult terrain, only to be met with an opponent list with no vehicles and a game with little difficult terrain?

Esteemed Leader is imo a must have on Krennic. He is only a 90 pt commander for that amount you can't expect him to be tanky. Keep him in cover and 2 corps unit close for esteemed leader. Also he is more of a support commander than a warrior so don't try to get him in range unless it is somehow safe.

For your list problems: Guessing what your enemy will take is part of army building. Build balanced lists for that reason or face the danger of being countered by your opponent's list or victory conditions. A good way to avoid being countered by conditions or the terrain is to bid for blue player. That way you can exclude the worst conditions (if you have the priority supply expansion) for your army and you can chose on which side of the table you want to start on depending on what terrain suits you better. Rule wise there is no wiggle room to change your list after you know your enemies list or the terrain. But that's just for competitive gaming, if your opponent is ok with it you can change the rules however you want in a non-competitive game. Usually what i do before I start a game when we set up terrain is to make sure there is enough space for a huge base to move through, wether I have a huge unit or not .

Krennic absolutely needs Deathtroopers while the opposite isn't true. He's also a support commander, and shouldn't be in the thick of things.

For list building, as Staelwulf said, build a well-rounded list, not one for dedicated to a single task. If everything but the most casual of games, its not generally allowed to change your list to counter your opponents. Otherwise, you could just have this endless series of tweaking lists to optimize them against your opponent. Build a deck of condition/deployment/objective cards that suits your build, and try to block the cards that don't fit your list or playstyle.

Cheers

Esteemed leader and running him close to two stormtrooper units kept him going to the end today with just 1 wound so thanks for the tip

Glad I could help 😄

put him behind something so he doesn't get shot. He should only come out in the open when he has a shot to give 1-2 wounds that no one else can hit. He's pretty reliable for 1-2 wounds with sharpshooter and pierce 1, but you don't want him getting shot at.
