Timing Gimli's Ability

Did you receive a reply to the follow-up questions?

Thank you! But I think the questions remain to be stated:

1) If the wording "after the attack" resolves after step 4 (counterattack), when does the last stand fit into all of this?

2) How can you place "one card from the test" if you already had to shuffle` (and if you set it aside, doesn't that mess with the odds in weird ways, thereby breaking up the seamless card mechanics -- eg. I could set aside a weakness to improve the negate test odds)?

3) which test is "the test" (attack or negate)?

Edit: I submitted these to admin. Hopefully there'll be an answer, because I really like using Gimli.

Hi All

I contacted AEG FFG about the exact timing regarding Gimli's ability, to clarify how it works when the previous ruling stated it triggered after all 4 steps of the attack had been completed.

My Questions;

Quote

A previous ruling states that the attack must be resolved fully before his ability can be used.

If so, which test is "the test" referred to in his ability?

What about the counter attack triggering a damage negation test?

What if a Last Stand is triggered? (Does this count as during the attack?)

What happens if a deck reshuffle is triggered when running out of cards?

Grace Holdinghaus graciously took time to help answer this when the AEG FFG rules query submission form wasn't working for me;

Gimli's ability currently states, "After you attack, you may place 1 card from the test on top of your deck."
As you point out, this is confusing when we consider possible counterattacks or other game effects.
Gimli's ability should read instead, "After you perform an attack test, you may place 1 card from the test on top of your deck."
This would occur after step 3 of the attack (section 12.4 of the Rules Reference), but before step 4.

Thankfully I feel this ruling puts Gimli's ability exactly where it should be, avoids confusion and gives him a great way of preparing a success to help tank against damage he may receive in return.

oh that is FANTASTIC news! good deal. thank you for asking

So the previous response from FFG is no longer valid? That’s fantastic, this latest one makes more sense and is less confusing!!

Wow, my reply was from Grace too. Guess there's been some internal debate on the subject since then.

Very curious to see what the final verdict will be in an official FAQ.

I left this part out, but she said the FAQ will be updated to reflect this chance.

Sill valid for Lead the Charge though!

Yep. Only Gimlis ability is errated. Not the rule.

I never did receive a reply, but it seems I no longer need one! This is just what I was hoping for. A clear and concise answer as to how to use his power, and one that seems to fit with Gimli's overall design in my opinion, which is as a tank. To be honest, I'm not even sure ringmail is a good idea on him, since agility is a fairly commonly used statistic. With a cloak, a couple inspiration, and a success on top of the deck, he's set to shrug off most attacks anyway. And he's got easy access to guard and rest as well. Anyway, thank you to Grace for this clarification.
