Fuel Leak whilst shielded

By Roundy1161, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi All,

Playing a game with friends yesterday and got a shot at Luke who had 1 shield and 1 hull left with fuel leak up (R2D2 regen)

I rolled hit hit crit at range 2, so in my mind, he was dead because fuel leak triggers. He managed 2 evades so then we argued about whether it triggered or not because he had a shield.

We ruled it did trigger, to his disappointment, as it reads that you still suffer the crit to the shields.

The damage section wasn't particularly helpful, but the attack chart is where I based it on.

Am I right?

TL;DR does a crit on shields trigger fuel leak?

As always, it helps to look at the actual language of the card. In this case, the key wording to look at is "After you suffer 1 critical damage..." In this framework, it means, "whenever you would take any damage, anywhere, due to a critical hit effect."
"Suffering" damage is an event, an active effect, that happens during the course of a game. When you suffer damage, you either flip a matching shield token, or receive a damage card (face up or down, as is relevant). Where the damage goes (shield or hull) is irrelevant: you're still "suffering" it. You can suffer damage from effects other than attacks: obstacles or bombs can also cause you to suffer damage, or a ship with Selfless can (conditionally) suffer critical damage in place of a teammate. You may also be able to cancel damage that you would otherwise suffer, with ship effects like Iden Versio.

Note, "Suffering" Damage is not to be confused with being "Damaged," which is a status effect within the game, that refers to having at least one damage card on your ship.

100% agree with @emeraldbeacon . basically, yes, you played it right. doesn't matter if the ship has shields to resolve suffering the (crit). fuel leak still triggers off the ship suffering the (crit).

Pretty much what I argued, glad I was right.

Yup. In this case the crit claims the shield, and because it was uffer3d, the fuels leak claims the farmboy.

The key is that Fuel Leak doesn't care about being dealt a face-up or face-down damage card, it's about suffering critical damage. It's still a critical damage if it's taken against the shields. Conversely, I suppose it's probably possible to be dealt a face-up damage card in a way which isn't critical damage. (The context would have to be different, a ship with sufficient hull remaining)

I think the 2e version of I'll Show You The Dark Side would do it. You don't suffer Critical Damage due to ISYTDS's substitution effect, so I think Fuel Leak wouldn't trigger. Heck, by this logic, ISYTDS isn't suffering damage of any kind. There may be other unusual rules interactions with this. Or I may be wrong.

you're right, @theBitterFig , i'll show you the dark side is a replacement effect for suffering critical damage, so a ship with the isytds condition card assigned to it would't trigger fuel leak if it took a crit. the critical damage is never suffered as a result of isytds.

a ship being dealt a damage card is not the same thing as a ship suffering damage either. much like loosing shields, a ship being dealt damage cards is just a way to resolve suffering damage.

I'd even copied the link to that card image, but forgot to put it in my post >.<

Thane's ability wouldn't trigger it either.

Nor would Rexler Brath's (or other similar effects that expose existing damage cards).
