Happy Friday

By Cubanboy, in X-Wing

Hello and Happy Friday.

Today I want to ask with Epic being 2-8 players what do you want to see from the game modes?
(Large ship battles, Respawns like battlefront or something else)

If you celebrate Passover or Good Friday I wish it well, if not hope the weekend is amazing and rest full.

I’m most excited for the narrative play. I’m hoping they release a full cooperative version. I’d be even more awesome if they released their own AI in 2.0.

One thing I’d also love to see in 2.0 is the release of a little space station of some sort that allows ships to land/launch. I’ve seen some cool custom made ones and this would make for great missions.

Happy Friday!

First off, isn't Epic listed as 3-8? (Which, yeah, seems odd.)

And then "Huge Ships" is 1v1 play??

Both of these things for sure.

But for narrative play, I'd like to see FFG have a little more fun with the ships themselves: A Corvus title to the the Rebels have a Raider for a campaign, The Shuttle Tydirium, a Bladewing version of the B-Wing (maybe with a super weapon!!), non-combat ships that support or need protecting. Maybe these are "campaign only" as far as the game as a whole is concerned, but then DIYers and folks that write their own scenarios (like me, @weisguy119 , and @heychadwick ) have "official" content to start from.

One thing I'm curious about if whether these campaigns and missions are going to be very generic (pick a faction and play) or if they are going to be designed around a specific set of factions (Battle of Scarif = Imperials vs. Rebels, for example), or both (Battle of Scarif with shield gate, but players can run Republic vs. First Order if they want).

I am super excited to see that lots of other people are excited. I would really love if my favorite way to play XWM was no longer considered left-over-x-wing-that-no-one-actually-plays-so-who-cares-what-you-want.

The guy in the panel specifically said 2-8 players, which is in disagreement with what that guy posted on the Reddit. I strongly believe it's 2-8, but the guy probably said 3-8 to underscore that Epic is THE way to play multiplayer.

I've pondered that as well. I would be happy either way. I could easily see the 11 scenarios being comprised of 3 campaigns of 3 missions for the three main eras, along with 2 standalone scenarios that can be played in any era. I mean, they could be more generic, but it takes the narrative out of it a little bit.

I'm really just excited to get my ships on the table in a big 6' x 3' field of battle. Just doing that will be enough. I loved the energy mechanic in first edition. Opening up my first Huge ship (the CR90) and reading all the rules gave me the thrill of opening a brand new game, but based off of one I was already in love with. I guess the huge ship was the first X-wing expansion that truly felt like it expanded my game in the truest sense of the word. I sense that the Conversion Kit and Epic Battles expansion will do the same thing for my games of X-wing Second Edition.

I am just really excited to find out all the mechanics and minutiae. Do we have energy still? Teams? Hardpoints? Cargo? Do huge ships insta-kill small, medium, and large ships? So many questions! I can't wait to start playing!

Okay, now that I'm done gushing, I think the thing I want to see most in the Epic Battles expansion are scenarios in which the win condition is not "kill more than they do." And I am very curious to see how many scenarios suffer from suicide syndrome (shout out to Shuttle Tydirium Podcast for a great discussion on this!).

And finally, I know I am the oulier here, but I LOVED Epic tournaments. It sounds like this will not be there focus because that will use up FFG's organized play resources, but I am curious to see if there will be general rules/guidelines about ship/upgrade count in Epic that will make tournaments engaging, and not just spam fests. If not, the community will have to come to some agreement about it, because I know we'll want to hold Epic tournaments in our area.

Co-Op AI App play like they moved to with IA, Descent, etc. would be sweet.

Happy pre-chocolate Friday!

I’m just looking forward to being able to put lots and lots of ships on the table...

Pretty sure I could field over 1000pts each for Rebels, Resistance, Empire or Scum! :o

Assuming they even use the same points system for squad building in Epic, of course... ;)

A Co-Op App-driven campaign where the app informs the AI of the enemy ships would be really sweet. I played the new LOTR app-driven game last night, and I've played all of the other ones (save IA, strangely enough) and I think it could work. Main difficulty would be maneuvering, but it could have some conditional movement options based on enemy and friendly placement or something like that.

All this. Seconded.

Well, that would be a pity.

I was hoping with the resources that FFG was finally beginning to commit to Epic, we would actually start see it being supported at Cons and stuff, via FFG themselves. Especially since in my survey thread, a lot of people had the ships, wanted to play, but could not find a venue for it except in the basement. Basically, I'm not a public player because. . .where would I?? This is a great opportunity for FFG to make events where you show up and play with someone, as well as against someone. Or, maybe players show up as teams/pairs. Maybe you only fight one or two battles in a day because they last 2-3 hours, but I would show up for that--because a grueling 48-hour-series of Standard micro-fights holds zero interest for me.

You know, I really want to see Epic in competitive events. I don't know how others feel, but I think it'd be cool,

I'm still looking forward to other play modes, but for me XWMG competition is a big draw for the social aspect and Team competitive play I feel would just reinforce that.

We'll see what happens.

I think I would like a mix of scenarios and an objective system somewhat like Armada has. This would allow for random games at stores and more narrative play at home. Looking forward to not having to wipe out all enemy ships to win.

I've played in 3 Epic tournaments, all of which were amazing fun. One of them was Team Epic, and there was WAY more laughter in those games (on both sides of the table) than any other time I played X-wing (except maybe Heroes of the Aturi Cluster). Multi-player Epic X-wing is just a good time!

I've played through the Tanitve IV campaign 2.5 times, and the first Raider mission, but those are the only Epic scenarios I got to play. Really hoping to have more chances this time around.

I am desperately hoping that the Gozanti will be cheap enough to fit 2 loaded out Bombers and 2 TIE l/n onto it.

I am _very_ happy to hear that they revamped the Huge ship maneuver template. Frankly, I never found moving those ships around the battlefield to be all that interesting. Don't get me wrong- I loved having them on the table! But they didn't _move_ very interestingly.

I'm also hoping that Huge ships get things like permanent reinforce (so they are sturdier than other ships!), but also that you can target and destroy hardpoints separately. Let TIE L/Ns strip off the guns so the bomber can move in and destroy the Hull.

Interesting. I found the movement very engaging. I used this one squad where the CR90 had Dash Rendar crew firing through my own GR-75 equipped with EM Emitter, so if they shot my CR90, it rolled 3 defense dice, but the CR90 ignored the obstruction when shooting the enemy. That involved a lot of careful maneuvering of huge ships, and I gained a deep appreciation for their lumbering maneuvers. And the fact that energy was tied to your maneuver made for a lot of interesting decisions. Loved it.

I hope that maneuvering these ships will be as dynamic, but even if it's not, I will still be thrilled just to have them on the table.

I'm looking forward to dusting off my old GR-75. Hoping for scenarios or missions that have a use for unarmed huge ships beyond just jamming stuff and taking hits. I like scenarios where I'm trying to defend these huge ships, but it would be nice if they could contribute a bit more.

I bought the Rebel Transport back in the day for the pilots & upgrades. Did anyone ever get any use out of it? If I remember correctly it didn't have any weapons, right?

Well, as a mostly Imp player, not much personally.

IIRC, lots of people used to to very good effect as an ECM type attacker. Apply stress, then use slicer tools to inflict the damage. To wit, I hope FFG doesn't just get lazy and slap guns on it.

Also, the CR-90 was interesting in that it's best attacks were as broadsides.

This sort of stuff needs to be the bread-and-butter of Epic--interesting mechanics that allow/force you to do something more than dodge and shoot.

Totally unarmed. Didn't have hard-points to add weapons either. It could Jam and pretty sure it could coordinate but that was about it.

I'd imagine they might make it into a coordinate boat or Targeting Synchronizer and/or Dutch-like abilities.

Maybe it will shoot focus tokens out to friendlies or be able to Jam out to R3.

Yes. It was a beast! In addition to ramming and slicing, it was great for coordinating and using Comms Booster to throw focus tokens around. Iirc, triple Comms Booster + Bright Hope was a super efficient build that saw widespread success.

Well there you go! That's likely where I got the idea.

I want missions.

and campaigns based around missions.

And special objective tokens to help with said missions.

And new obstacle types with specialized mission-based rules. Maybe things with an extra level of complexity that doesn’t fit standard play. Or maybe an unusual size that won’t work well for standard play.

Basically, I want a game that feels like it’s more immersive as Star Wars rather than just a miniatures game that has Star Wars skin (no offense standard play, I really enjoy playing standard too. Just want to see some extra thematic feeling stuff coming out of epic)

I'm hoping for something like that, or that it's jamming will be similar to 1st ed epic jam as that inflicted stress instead of the jam token. It was good at what it did, and with slicing it could deal a little damage. Although you were always better off with more smaller ships in the old epic just for the sake of having more guns pointed at your opponent. It's a difficult problem to get around, and I'm hoping the solution to it isn't to just add weapons. It should probably be a dedicated support/sabotage ship IMO.

It was also pretty nasty with Toryn Farr crew:

ACTION: Spend any amount of energy to choose that many enemy ships at Range 1-2. Remove all focus , evade , and blue target lock tokens from those ships.

I haven't really thought about it in detail yet.

I guess, I want something that's not too complicated. I don't want to feel like I'm learning a whole new game just to have some narrative multiplayer fun.

I want something that's not afraid to be a bit bold? This may sound like it contradicts the previous point a bit, but I'll give an example. People have talked about a Battle of Hoth thing for a long time, with Snowspeeders and maybe even AT-ATs in X-Wing. One of the other games might be more appropriate for that specifically, but I'd like for new Epic to be able to give us things that wouldn't fit in X-Wing's normal space dogfights.

I'd love to be able to have some unique objectives with their own models. A Death Star or even Star Destroyer might be too big for normal X-Wing, but perhaps we could have a box set that includes a relevant piece of one as an objective.

I want a game mode that doesn't take the whole night. I know multiplayer will make things take longer, but I hope they don't have to be too long. I burn out quickly if I'm doing one thing without a break. A normal X-Wing match played to completion (not time) is okay for me, but Warhammer used to feel like I could have been spending my time better.
