Speeder bike tactics

By Capt.Yog, in Army Building

Hey guys

I've always liked this model, and now that playing Legion, it is normal I'm using them....but. I can't manage to do anything useful with, always get caught but tones of firepower. I was thinking it was more of a flanking unit, but they always found them self alone.

Do you guys have advice on how to use them on the battlefield?

Cheers!

Activate them last during round 1, win the initiative and activate them first during round 2. Bikes can be very strong at thinning your opponent's troops and handing out suppression. Since they ignore terrain that is below height 1, you may be able to do your compulsory move, shoot at an enemy, and then fly over and behind a piece of LOS blocking terrain.

I run mine with HQ uplink stapled to them (or long range commlink if you're just starting with wave 1 stuff). They are highly dependent on order tokens to be truly effective. You need to either activate them first to shoot and then run away or you need to hold them back until the last activation to zip in and shoot with impunity.

You can use this to your advantage by putting 'initiative pressure' on your opponent. If your opponent also has an order dependent unit (like Luke Skywalker) the bikes can be used to force him to have to choose between activating luke first (to get a dodge token or get into melee for protection) or activate a unit to deal with the bikes. It goes without saying you want to keep the bikes away from Luke for this to work 😂

Also terrain is your friend. being able to duck over buildings or walls to get out of LoS is really powerful on dense maps

If you want to go all in and run 2-3 bike squads I would recommend using Veers as your commander because his 2 and 3 pip command cards are a great help to vehicles.

Played right, the 2-pip from the Imperial Specialists expansion could also be great with these guys against the right lists, especially since we'll be seeing CIS faction soon.

Nice call guys, thanks a lot. I use to be a 40k player for 15 years...now I need to adapt :) Your inputs are great. Thanks

Don’t forget that you can repair a bike with the astromechs.

This is true, but if I'm reading the RRG correctly it can't be used to restore a bike to a unit that's lost one; they can only repair damaged bikes actively in play.

Yep, you can remove a wound but not bring back a mini like the medic droids can for troopers.
