Dice modification (spending results)

By Icelom, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Is spending a dice result a modification?

Basically can thane

use his ability while he has the blinded pilot critical damage card?

My looking could find no reference for spending a dice result. I am fairly sure its allowed but wanted to put it out there as i do not know 100% for sure.

It is right under Re-Roll in the Rules Reference:

Dice Modification

Players can modify dice by spending various tokens and by resolving abilities. Dice can be modified in the following ways:

Add: To add a die result, place an unused die displaying the result next to the rolled dice. A die added in this way is treated as a normal die for all purposes and can be modified and canceled.

Change: To change a die result, rotate the die so that its faceup side displays the new result.

Reroll: To reroll a die result, pick up the die and roll it again.

Spend: To spend a result, remove the die from the dice pool.

Additionally:

Dice modification occurs during the respective Modify Attack Dice or Modify Defense Dice step, unless otherwise stated.

Although dice can be modified by multiple effects, each die cannot be rerolled more than once.

If an ability instructs a ship to spend a result, it cannot spend another ship's results unless stated otherwise.

Canceling dice is not a dice modification.

Rolling additional dice or fewer dice is not a dice modification.

If a die cannot be changed to a given result, nothing happens.

For example, an attack die cannot be changed to an result because that result does not appear on that die.

If I had a penny for every time I blipped past something I was looking for my home would be paid off. No worries man. :)

Part of it is due to what I call First Edition Inertia : the tendency to do things the same way in Second Edition, simply because that's how you always used to do it in First Edition. Frequent culprits are range bonuses on non-ordnance weapons, measuring for Target Locks, and the entire System Phase. ;)

Calling Blue maneuvers Green, forgetting Barrel Rolls have more restricted placements, forgetting bombs are dropped in the system phase instead of ship activation.. lol List goes on.

  • "An ion move is a one straight green."
    • "No it's not."
  • "Yeah, it is, it clears stress now."
    • "No, it's not green."
  • "Yes it is, they changed it."
    • "Of course they changed it, but it's BLUE."
  • "...can we continue?"
    • "Of course."
