X-Wing IROC ideas?

By Jyico, in X-Wing

Back in the late 70's through I don't remember how long, the US had an IROC race with similarly setup race cars. Everyone seemingly on equal playing field. Would an idea like this have any traction in the upper levels of the competitive community?

Obviously there's a real difference in initiative for lists that are identical, so I don't think one list for everyone for the whole tournament would be ideal. That seems like it would give a huge advantage to whomever won the coin flip. I think that Coruscant was a good gage forcing players to incorporate a certain ship into their lists. But did it go far enough? What if we had something based on the current tracked SO meta, and identified the characteristics that make each archetype great. You could show up for said tournament and have lists provided to you.

Maybe Hangar bay style, you get 4 options. Set a dial to one of 4 options: Jousting list, toolbox list, ace list, or swarm. If you selected "JOUST ME" you might be quad phantoms or rebel beef, which specific list you get to fly would be random of course. Swarm might be part of jousting, and only have 3 options. Toolbox list could be a number of high performing lists with lots of options, and an ace list might be the resistance aces Poe/Nien/Lulo or even Fel/Vader/x. Not knowing which of these specific lists you might get depending on what archetype you choose... what choice would you make? What if you had to choose one list archetype each round, over 4 rounds? Would this be a good measure of skill or just another random-dice-win-meme tournament?

I think I just wasn't quite as impressed with Coruscant last year and am thinking of other ideas that might be a better fit for something of that caliber. Or even something that could be a fun weekday tournament with 3 shortened rounds.

Edit: Of course if its named IROC then mullet optional. :D

...I guess we'll see an uptick in A-Wings with metallic black Screaming Chicken paintjobs.
