Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker on Disney+ May 4th

By Imperial Advisor Arem Heshvaun, in Star Wars: Armada

There was a spoiler for a story rumor posted on the page before and this latest trailer confirms a lot of it.

I’m potentially dissappointed in the story and I’m pretty pro sequel trilogy.

-Spoiler-

Stop with superweapons of any kind. It’s become the laziest form of writing in Star Wars.

Enough about the ISDs, let's talk about that awesome Victorinox light saber at the end.

Why does Disney hate the Imperial II?

Have we ever seen the below of an ISD1? Maybe they all look like that. Maybe those are the torpedo tubes...

Ummmm... The begining of ANH.

Because they paid for and own a digital model of the Imperial I for Rogue One. Since 90% of people won’t and don’t care about the difference between both models I’m sure they made the cost effective choice of the Imperial I.

I did say “maybe”...

Of course, Devastator is a late cycle ISD1 - the last of the 1s to be produced...

That's almost certainly all of the truth of it.

And not really surprising - the ISD-II only came about, itself, for the same reason. When 'Star Wars' was first pitched, the Stardestroyer (yes, a single compound word) was meant to be a triangular 2-man fighter hunting the Rebel ship in swarms. Even as recently as the production of the movie itself - the ships chasing the Tantive IV were...well, yeah, ships, plural. There were supposed to be 4 of them. The model of the Imperial Cruiser (trivia: never called a 'Star Destroyer' until 'Empire Strikes Back') was half the size of the Tantive IV model. And that's what they went to production with, because that's what they had, since there were originally going to be a number of them.

Film magic scaled it up a lot to make it a single very LARGE ship, but...it didn't have the detail really needed to be the star of a film on its own.

So when ESB went into production, with the huge success of the first film, they made an entirely new model from scratch - massively bigger studio model - this time with interior lighting and much finer modelling for better closer-up shots. And that model then used for every ISD seen in the next two movies, for no reason other than "it was the best Star Destroyer model available for filming".

The thing is that Lucasfilm never really intended them to be different ship types. It was only when fans started picking over the details after all the movies were said and done that the number of discrepancies between the now-episode-4 Star Destroyer vs the episodes 5/6 Star Destroyers...seemed odd. And while no "official" explanation ever did arrive (at the time), the franchise was effectively nothing BUT the expanded universe at that point, desperate for content, and so the EU authors decided the difference was meaningful, and here we are today.

If we are seeing that massive fleet and if it is the Palpatine fleet he sent to the Unknown regions over time, then I really hope we see his Eclipse SSD show up

It certainly exists, and was visible when Grand Admiral Rae Sloane declared “the First Order.”

its just a matter if, like her.... It survived until this point.

TIE Whisper

I always thought the Whisper was a Tie Phantom Pilot. lol

Though I have to admit, I think it's a cool name for Tie variant.

Tie Whisper is possibly the coolest name for a tie variant.

Actually surprised it took this long for the name to be used.

The way its presented so far, makes me wonder if it *is* a Class all of its own, or wether its a singular unique ship... "The Whisper" in and of itself doesn't conclude a whole TIE Whisper line, for example.

Still waiting for the TIE Murmur, Shusher and Muffled Thud.

Tie Sneeze? Flown specifically by imperial pilots who are also dads?

Yeah I'm wary of these descriptors that sound increasingly grandiose.

The TIE Defender is at least a kind of function- it is a defender. Best ship to get the job done because you want the best defense possible. TIE Silencer at least sounds like an elite one-off flown by an ace, so it works. TIE Whisper!? What is it... whispering? Sounds like an intelligence gathering craft but clearly it isn't.

Wish Disney would dial back on the descriptors and bring them back to the real world. A TIE Interceptor Improved, or TIE Interceptor II wouldn't be so bad.

RE: ISD-I, it's nice comeuppance for a variant that was ignored since the ESB model came out. I like the little distinctions of the ISD-I model.

At least for IX, I wonder if there isn't even another explanation.

JJ Abrams to art department: "For this next movie, I want a Star Destroyer, but with two super massive cannons on it, like...mini-Death-Star guns."

Six months of work later, art department delivers:

JJ Abrams: "What the fu...what IS that piece sh...I said Star Destroyer with two huge guns! What IS that thing?? It's totally...creative and original and other horrifically insulting words like that! Who wants THAT?? I want a Star Destroyer with two huge guns on it!! Just grab the model from Rogue One and slap some massive cannons on the bottom, and never show me anything like this ever again..."

JJ Abrams is a great filmmaker...but he’s not a creative storyteller.

He’s a terrific craftsman but not an artist.

Honestly I think the problem is JJ is too much of a fan, and too much an OT fan and PT hater at that.

Prequels and sequels are meant to expand the world. Prequels explain it and sequels expand it whereas the main/original simply needs to tell a great story.

For better or worse the Prequels explained the world. However I don’t think “The Force Awakens” did much to expand the galaxy. If anything the world of Star Wars feels incredibly tiny in the Sequels.

Yet “The Rise of Skywalker” looks to be vast in scale and stakes. I just hope we get glimpses of a lot of planets like we did in Revenge of the Sith. Give us Coruscant!

As a side note: Oddly I think it will only make “The Force Awakens” more disappointing to the overal story while elevating “The Last Jedi”.

I would like to say that his skill as a filmmaker is.... Acceptable. I can say watching the new Star Trek movies, cursed lensflares!!!! Also 90% if the run time was mug shots, with a healthy spattering of God awful camera angles.

Taking all that into consideration I would say he really wants to be a Lighting director or a cinematographer.
