So much about lists, so little about flying...

I find it surprising no one has done that for xwing. The information density was about 500% better than even the best of the xwing game streams, which have maybe 15mins of good commentary spread out over a 75min game. Most podcasts/blogs suffer from similar issues, lots of hypothe tical scenario and list talk, but not much in the way of visualized of real games scenarios, so the usefulness is pretty limited.

It takes so much time to prepare though! What day9 did/does is really impressive. Then again, he turned it into his job and for good reason.

My movement strategy: sometimes I go straight, sometimes I turn left, sometimes I turn right, and if I am feeling really spicy, sometimes I turn around. Very rarely do I fully stop, but when I do, it feels stressful. She’ll hold together! Here me, baby, hold together

My dice strategy: I pick them up and shake them in my hand/hands, depending on the number of dice. Before they hit the table, I know two truths. 1. the green dice will fail me, and any successful evade will probably get juked, and 2. My red dice will be blank at a rate well above statistical norms. That’s impossible! Search your feelings. you now it to be true.

Special tip: Be careful in asteroid fields, as the odds of successfully navigating an asteroid field is approximately 3,720:1. I t doesn’t feel good to land on a rock. Don’t do that, unless you have to.

Pro tip: Practice with your list. Look good against remotes is one thing. Good against the living, that’s something else.

Final thoughts. Remember to quote Star Wars as often as possible, it is scientifically proven to improve your game play and may the Force be with you.

This is the truest thing of all.

Angles of approach. Is this a thing?

I'm still learning, so don't properly define what I'm doing. But I flank a lot and try to avoid jousts like the plague, even if sometimes I'd be better just going straight for the King.

I believe this means I try to maintain a 45 degree angle to my opponents ships, so I can flee, turn in or arrow past and avoid blocks. Depending on obstacle layout and perceived future positions of the enemy.

But I may just be winging it and doing certain things because they feel right and turn out well, or I'm actually doing a lot of things wrong because I'm not attentive enough.

When I played SC2, the reason I was ranked Platinum instead of Silver was almost entirely due to Day9's youtube channel. In 45 min videos he went through 3-5 games, fast forwarding through much of the game with brief descriptions of what's happening, and playing/pausing for deep discussions on key moments.

It takes some skill to condense a game into information chunks that the average gamer can understand. I often mute the commentary on game streams because 99% of it is either obvious or nonsense.

It also takes time to review a game, analyze it, and make a productive commentary.

Absolutely it is a thing. The right angle of approach is typically a function of the dial differences between the different ships on the involved lists.

Like, if the key opposing ships only have one hard turn available, I try hard to approach with my most important ships from 90 degrees off the flank. It means if their key ships turn toward your key ships, you know which maneuver they will take. This lets you select maneuvers and actions that can take advantage of that selection.

Yeah sure, I'm not trying to make light of it, just considering the size of the x-wing community I'm just suprized we haven't got to that point yet.

I wouldn't hesitate to patreon a channel that was half as good as day9's, I'd guess there are decent size group of people who feel the same.

Ah of course. Totally depends on the opponents available manoeuvres. So its less an overall thing and back to situational :D

Still, an important and fundamental consideration that I did not appreciate for quite some time. I had to learn bad things about having my arc facing away from the approach, or right into the teeth of it, on numerous occasions.

The Echobase people started something along those lines.

It feels like there are more possibilities to explore. Eg I've never seen them going into possible alternative moves as chess channels always do. But vassal is a bit clunky if not outright impossible to do that, and unfortunately it's the best we have.

To a degree, it's opponent agnostic. Tooling at TIE Interceptors, I like having an opponent on the 90 degree flank just before the engagement turn. The Interceptor can 1-hard and roll in or 3 hard and roll out, or boost instead of roll, etc. It's a lot of positions the ship can attack from.

Yeah, drawing on the screen with markers would probably be the most viable option unless someone builds a dedicated playback mode into one of the virtual options.

...but I like talking about lists.

:(

It's the same as Golf ....

People spend $800 on a driver & $70 on super awesome golf balls and they think that'll get them entry to the Masters, but all you need to do is practice the basics

I hit just over par in most games using crappy clubs I brought 25yrs ago

This is honestly something I would be interested in doing. I have much of the equipment (a little dated but functional,) some background in the field, the interest... problem being lack of people to pair up with. I’m certainly not strong enough tactically and even socially to pull it off on my own.

Not many players weekly at the shop and few of them want to play on camera, which I can’t blame them.

I was imaging people just drawing from existing game footage.

"Prauxim, is that legal?"

I will make it legal.

I thought about that, but rather not grab somebody else’s footage without permission. Again, considering the solo aspect, I’ve no interest in chasing that down either.

The below link is too long, we did the whole game, but was a test run and mostly just seeing if what was possible. Learned a lot from it, though never had the opportunity to follow up with any more. If I ever do get serious buy in things would be a bit cleaner.
