Do gas clouds add 2 defense dice for the defender?

By dherve10, in X-Wing Rules Questions

The rules state that "When a gas cloud obstructs an attack, the defender rolls 1 additional defense die..."

Is this additional defense die in addition to the one already added by obstructed attacks, or just referring to adding a defense die as obstructed attacks normally do?

It is just referring to adding a defense die as obstructed attacked normally do.

all obstacles can have what ever effect when obstructing an attack. debris adds a die, so does an asteroid. it also happens that gas clouds does this. there is no normal die added from obstacles in general.

Are you sure about that? From the Rules Reference, under Obstacles:
While a ship performs an attack, if the attack is obstructed by an obstacle, the defender rolls one additional defense die.

While you're right that he's wrong, it doesn't change the fact that - it seems that - the same effect being stated in the rules multiple times in many entries does not cause it to multiply. If you take a closer look even at the most interesting bits of RR from the point of this discussion, you'll notice that the Obstacles section says:

Quote

While a ship performs an attack, if the attack is obstructed by an obstacle, the defender rolls one additional defense die.

At the same time, then very next chapter regarding Obstruction, says:

Quote

If at least one asteroid or debris cloud obstructs an attack, the defender rolls one additional defense die during the Roll Defense Dice step.

And so, the additional defence die is granted both by the rules of obstruction and the rules of obstacles. Does it set up a room to argue we should be rolling two additional dice? Perhaps. Do we? No. Similarly, the rules-insert rule for gas clouds simply overlaps with the existing rules.

Cheers.

i don't feel that you should add obstacle obstruction on top of asteroid or debris obstruction - and so i ignore it and only follow the rules for obstruction outlined under obstruction. especially when dealing with obstruction.

but yes, i know there is a "normal" die added and no other dice added from obstacles. i believe this "normal" die will be eliminated sooner or later though, since it's kind of limiting design space. :)
