Grappling Struts sequence

By Slade, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I hope my Vulture droids will arrive soon as I would like to give the struts a spin. In order to prepare I did look at the varoius questions posted on this forum. From various posts I understood the following sequence would work. Not sure it’s the right thing to do but wondering if I have it all correct before flying with the Vultures.

On turn 1 I play a maneuver that puts my ship on a rock/debris – overlaps – so I can open the struts. I do not role for potential damage, receive no stress (in case of debris) and have an action to calculate or otherwise. I can also attack from the rock/debris.

On turn 2 I dial a hard 1 turn. My ship stays on the rock/debris and can turn 90 degrees, than as my only action I can barrel roll off next to the rock/debris potentially with the barrel roll partly overlapping the rock/debris. Struts will remain open at this stage P.S. I could also barrel roll to the opposite site on the rock/debris but lets assume I don't. Once next to the rock/debris I don’t get a stress (in case I move over debris) and I can attack later in the turn potentially with an attack and/or defense modification due to the rock/debris.

On turn 3 I can dial any maneuver and move ‘normally’ and after finishing the maneuver close the struts … to be opened again if I end my maneuver overlapping a rock/debris and the sequence to start again. Since formally the struts are still close and I do not land on a rock/debris my maneuver takes me over a rock/debris do I get to roll for potential damage and, in case of debris, a stress as well?

I may have not worded all of that correct but is the above sequence of events correct or am I still missing some details?

Thx. for comment.

If you start open and off the rock, you can't reopen if you land on a rock, because the tirgger for closing the struts is afterr executing as manoeuvre, and the rigger for opening them is whilst executing,so you close nthem after the trigger point where you could have opened them.

As thespaceinvader pointed out, you cannot 'land' with struts open if you start the maneuver with struts open because of the timing difference between opened and closed. However, I would like to specifically point out that struts don't flip to closed until after the maneuver which is the same timing as obstacle effects in regards to maneuvering. Which means even though you do close struts you still do not roll for damage, gain a stress from debris, or skip your action step :) (still lose the shot if it's an asteroid though)

An alternative suggestion for rock hopping is that you can set up obstacles tightly and land partially on one then Barrel Roll to the edge of the next one. Keep in mind that range 1 is 2.5 bases.

by the same timing, @nitrobenz means the effects share the timing after executing a maneuver (except gaining stress from debris, which has the arguably slightly earlier timing of "after the check difficulty step"). the difference is game effects that occur from flying over or overlapping an obstacle always occur before the player effect of closing the struts. therefore, you cannot take damage from an asteroid or gain stress from debris if you start your maneuver with struts open, even of you wanted to.

Thx. all. To be sure I get it .....

If I start with struts open off a rock/debris and my maneuver takes me on/over a rock/debris I don't roll for damage and I don't gain stress but I do close the struts at the end of the sequence. So no attack roll that turn but could I take an action?

Another example - While on a rock with closed struts I don't get to roll for attack this turn and when I somehow have to maneuver over a rock/debris the next turn (so I don't end up overlapping a rock/debris) I will roll for damage and gain stress?

1. correct

2. yes, you can't attack with closed struts on an asteroid. no, next turn you can open the struts during the maneuver - and of you do, you won't have to take stress or roll for damage.
