New to AGoT LCG: Question about how the Chapter Packs work

By paulb1988, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

Hey all,

My gf and I are relatively new to AGoT LCG, having picked up and played the Core Set numerous times. My question is, we want to start branching out and trying out the various chapter packs that come out. How are those added to a core deck? Do you add all the cards from a particular chapter to one of the core decks as is? Do you separate out the chapter pack cards by House and add the respective cards to the appropriate houses? We're not especially experienced at deck building, because we play AGoT pretty much very casually. Any guidance would be helpful, because it seems like there are an overwhelming number of Chapter Packs out there, so it's pretty confusing.

Thanks!!

NG

Yeah there are a lot of chapter packs, but once you get a couple of them it won't seem like its so much.

I'd start by picking my favorite house and work on that one for a while before I started trying to tweak all the decks at once if you are not that comfortable with deck building.

As for which chapter packs to get, my best advice is to look here at what is in each chapter pack (there is a drop down box entitled Set and the chapter packs are numbers 1, 2, 3, and 6 with each chapter pack being x-1 through x-6). that way you can see which cards you like the best for your chosen house and do selective purchasing. Then you as you get more of a feel and handle on how things work in your deck you can start filling out the rest of your collection with the other chapter packs and building up your other decks.

Also, a good place to start might be the two expansion boxes for Greyjoy and Martell number 4 and 5 on the above linked site). You can see what FFG did there with putting together more focused decks and you get a couple of cards for the other houses too.

Thanks for the help Lars! Your answer was just what I was looking for. I just won 16 expansions in an auction and didn't have a clue how to proceed. That site you listed is awesome!

Some of the questions you should ask yourself are: are you building a single deck for yourself or are you building decks for all your gaming partners as well? This can influence what Chapter Packs are must buys and for what number. Other things to consider are that some CP cycles introduce far fetching mechanics such as the Shadows mechanism from King's Landing cycle and some continually supported themes such as the seasons from A Time of Ravens cycle.

For example, if you are building decks for all your gaming partners (of 2-6) and you are interested in the seasons theme, then you may need multiple A Song of Summer, the Winds of Winter, and A Change of Seasons (CPs 1, 2, and 3 of A Time of Ravens cycle).

I've written a rudimentary buyer's guide for casual gamers here , which may be serviceable.
