Custom Investigator: Sister Mary

By WantonJohnson, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Hey everybody. I've been looking to recreate one of my favorite Arkham investigators in the card game, Sister Mary, and I'd love to see what you guys think/get some feedback. I've made the rounds in reddit and BGG but I figured this would be a great place to get some extra eyes. This is a rough draft, and I'm sorry for the lack of pictures. I'm still working on photoshop. She's a survivor btw

Sister Mary: The Nun

Sister. Believer

Stats- Willpower: 4 Intelligence: 3 Fight: 2 Agility: 3

Health: 5 Sanity: 9

Card Text: Whenever an investigator at your location takes horror, you make take any amount of that horror instead

Elder Sign: +1. You may heal 1 horror from any investigator at your location

Deckbuilding Restrictions: Survivor cards lv 0-5, mystic cards lv 0-2, neutral cards lv 0-5. 1 copy of Prayer, 1 copy of Crisis of Faith. 1 basic weakness

Signature Cards

Prayer.

Asset. Free to play

Talent. Spirit

Prayer begins the game in play. Uses 4 Free Action: Exhaust prayer and spend 1 charge. Test Will X, where X is the amount of horror on Sister Mary. If you pass, either heal 1 horror OR gain +1 to a stat of your choice until the end of the turn

Crisis of Faith

Weakness. Treachery.

Test Will X, where X is the amount of horror on Sister Mary. Take 2 horror for each point you fail by. If you pass, shuffle Crisis of Faith back into your deck

What I'm going for is a Nun who's there to comfort others and uses her religion to give herself and others strength against the horrors they find. But the more horror she comes across, the more her faith is shaken. I'd love to hear what you guys think though. From the feedback Ive gotten so far, I'm thinking about making Crisis of Faith do 1 horror damage for each point failed, plus she can lose actions instead of taking the horror on a point for point basis. As for Prayer, I'm leaning towards making it take up an arcane slot, and maybe not start in play.

I think Prayer is a bit underwhelming. Passing a skill check which could be as high as 8 to just get a +1 to a skill for a turn (I guess that's not usable during any phase outside of the players phase, thats unclear) or heal a horror seems a bit underwhelming, plus it only has 4 uses. The way its written now, you would absolutely use it on your first 4 turns before your horror gets to high to pass this test.

The weakness seems overally punishing on the character as well. Setting the difficulty as the amount of horror and then inflicting horror as a failure consequence is going to lead to situations where either she passes and reshuffles or it eliminates her. Plus no matter what you do, tentacles exist. With a modest 3 sanity on her and a tentacle pull, she goes straight to 9. I do like the skill test for a sig weakness, which I don't think we have seen before.

I do like how you did her stat line, her roles, her special ability and her elder sign ability.

I like where you are going, with her thematically, I just think it snowballs a bit.

Right I see where you're coming from. Like I said, for her weakness, I'm really leaning towards changing it to "for each point you fail by, take 1 horror or lose 1 of your next actions", that way she can handle it a lot better. Maybe if she fails by 3, she takes 2 horror and loses 1 action, or 1 horror and 2 actions, etc. For her signature asset, it's definitely giving me the most trouble, but I think by starting with it in play it could make it less underwhelming. She can stave off horror or give herself an edge very easily towards the beginning, while her faith is still strong. I'm definitely going to make it take up an arcane slot though, and play around with it just being shuffled into her deck in exchange for changing it up a bit. I appreciate the feedback! I'm going to try to make it less snowbally
