1e seismic torpedo question

By LTuser, in X-Wing Rules Questions

OK. So since proximity mines in 1e, can be considered obstacles.. CAN they be 'targeted and blown up' by seismic charge torpedos for 1st edition?? OR do those torpedos ONLY apply to asteroids/debris fields??

Short answer: No, Seismic Torpedoes can only target Asteroids and Debris.

In first edition, obstacles were clearly defined as asteroids and debris fields (which include Loose Cargo Tokens). In addition, certain items could become obstacles, in various game modes (certain mission-specific tokens, or huge ship bases). Proximity Mines, however, are always Bombs (now called Devices in Second Edition). Certain effects (notably Captain Nym) can cause an obstruction-like effect when a line of fire is drawn over a bomb... but the bomb/mine itself is never considered to be an obstacle.

I second @emeraldbeacon 's answer{for 1e standard play.}

The only time that I know of that its ever been considered an 'obstacle' is in the Heroes of the Aturi Cluster campaign, even then those are specifically Minefields, not Proxy mines (even tho they use a similar graphic). With that specific instance of Minefields, yes they can be targeted by seismic torpedoes. Proxy Mines are still a separate thing and are never obstacles, even in that campaign.

That's what i was on about. The 'mine fields' in HOTAC, which uses the same visual as proximity mines (so i just call them in place PMs).. Had a mission last night, where the enemy base had 4 of them around it, and as per the mission and notes from HOTAC, the minefields DO count as obstacles for rebels shooting at enemies.. So the other player (Donovan), was wondering, since he has a Seismic torpedo, would that count for shooting a mine field, as its "An obstacle"??

I see... More of a HOTAC specific question than a 1e question. Nevermind me 🙃

Sure. It makes sense. Tho we personally ruled in our game that it doesnt work on the Ion clouds simply because it didnt make sense. But for minefields, yeah i can see a seismic blast setting off a bunch of mines.

Given that info I would rule that yes, seismic Torpedoes can destroy the mines.
