Getting new crystals in novels or comic

By damnkid3, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

I was curious in the books or comics do we see the character going on quest to get new crystals when they lose their saber or get a better crystal to improve their weapon. Like going kill a Kryt Dragon for their crystal.

In the movies or cartoons the only one I have really seen is the Illum quest to get their 1st one.

In the Tales of the Jedi comics, Jedi of the time typically made use of various Adegan crystals, of which Mephite and Pontite were the most sought after. In the game Knights of the Old Republic, the player does go on crystal hunts, first on Dantooine, where he gets his first crystal, but also finds other crystals with various capabilities, on other worlds, even killing a Krayt Dragon and gaining a Krayt Dragon Pearl, allowing the player to further customize his lightsaber(s), and those of the other Jedi in his party.

In the comics they do find new crystals, the way you can locate which comics or books contain crystal X on wookieepedia for example is to find the mega list of kyber crystals(legends and canon). On each crystals individual page the appearances and sources list the book, comic, movie, tv show or videogame from where they come from.

Darth Vader (2017 Comic) shows how Vader replaces his crystal after Obi-Wan takes Anakin’s lightsaber following their duel on Mustafar.

Cheapest way to read the Marvel (and old Dark Horse) Star Wars comics is to get Marvel Unlimited. I’ve had it for years. Definitely beats buying them individually, especially if you have a tablet.

Let's not forget Ezra's quest through an ancient temple, involving intense Force visions in Rebels. There's also Ahsoka's search for her crystals in the Ahsoka novel, where it turns out the crystals destined by the will of the Force to be hers had previously been acquired by an Inquisitor, forcing her to confront the Inquisitor to gather her crystals.

Sorry, I guess I asked the question wrong. Do we ever see Jedi who currently have a crystal go on quests to get a better crystal?

Trying to help justify my belief that the Jedi will continue to keep the the crystal they have versus searching for better crystals to work in their lightsaber. So if they have an Illum crystal they don't go on quest to find better crystals to put in their lightsaber.

No, I don’t believe they do.

1. Jedi form a bond with their specific crystal within the Force. Replacing it just because would be antithetical to Jedi beliefs.

2. In canon I don’t believe they make distinctions between types of lightsaber crystals. A kyber crystal is a kyber crystal. There is no better crystal than the one they are already bonded to. (If I’m wrong, someone please correct me)

You pretty much nailed it. The only Force users who seem to require a journey to "upgrade" their crystals are the Sith. Even then, it's more about the corruption of an existing crystal, and less about actually finding an improvement over their current one. It's a way to cement their commitment to the Dark Side more than anything else. An expression of how the Sith bend the Force to their will, rather than passively following the will of the Force as the Jedi do.

As far as I can tell, a kyber crystal is a kyber crystal in canon. There's no distinct types, no advantages to be gained from using one kind or another. The diversity in canon comes from the different lightsaber designs, not different crystals.

Even in Legends, very, very few stories focused on the different crystal types and their effects, outside of the games. Sure, crystals were occasionally given different names, but no real distinction was made regarding function outside of a handful of stories that passively mentioned it.

In KoTOR, the player does gather multiple different crystals throughout the game even after getting his first crystal. So, yes.

Just picked this classic up for my xbox one, but it’s worth noting that KOTOR is legends material. One of my favorite games though.

So they only time we really have people looking for better crystals is in video games or role playing games. Not in any printed material known.

Thanks everyone!

That game was indeed a great book or comic.

More or less. It's a story thing.

In Video Games and such you're looking for content, so filler isn't a problem. Sending the hero to track down the codpiece of Mandalore the Endowed gives you that content and extends playtime even if it takes them out of the main story.

But in media that have a limited amount of time and space, and need to keep the story at a proper pacing, you don't need or want to waste time tracking down a trinket. So Luke gets to start RotJ with a new saber, no questions asked.
