I have an adaptive tournament coming up and am not quite sure what to take there. I have a few decks I am very familiar with, but which are of rather variable strength. Can you think of advantages and disadvantages of taking mediocre, strong, or weak decks?
What factors beside familiarity do you consider when picking a deck for adaptive?
The strength of the deck grant no net advantage, since both player use it. The relatively stronger deck gets nerfed by chain in round three. The only thing you can really control is how well you know your deck.
I would think weak to mediocre. A deck that you know the nuances well that can come together that you’ll be able to play well but your opponent won’t.
I would try to lose with my deck, win with my opponent’s deck, then run up the chains a bit but let them win it and then beat them with my deck. At least that’s what I would try to do.
Haven’t had the pleasure of anyplace playing this format yet but I think I’d choose one of my decks that’s somewhat strong but lacks in a key area so that when my opponent plays I can, hopefully, exploit that weakness. Wouldnt always work but the format is an interesting one that seems like it would really balance out deck differences and truly come down to pilot.
I would pick a deck which you know you can win with a decent % of time, but which has a counterintuitive or complex path to winning. This make it so you have a chance of winning straight out without a game 3, and handicaps your opponent by giving them a deck which will be a struggle for them to play effectively.
