State of the game - FFG we need answers

By FrogTrigger, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Funny story. I have been trying to sell my Legion core set for like 10 months, with very limited interest. Some guy offers me half of my price, which was already a lot lower than retail. I counter with half retail and he says I should be selling him for the price he offered because that's what it's worth and this is how they do it with 40K. I said 40K was a dead game and that Legion was starting to take off, which clearly I don't really believe that, I think it's just over-hyped. He tells me only 40K players are buying this game! LOL!!!

Can anyone confirm that this is true? I don't know anyone who plays it here, and the ones who I knew had got into it, had stopped buying it a long time ago. Is this game really that popular that it needs this much attention over IA? It baffles me. Is it just it's easier for them to make money from a new game and especially one with less restrictions?

If I understand right, are you asking if 40K is popular?

I mean, it's been around forever, so it's got a pretty big following.

But I don't think "only 40K fans are buying Legion". Sounds like you guy is just looking for a deal. Half off retail isn't a bad offer at all for him. Your set is worth whatever you decide.

Bought into Legion?! What for? That's crazy!

Poor Guy, You'll never get your money back now... 😥

I guess IA is hipster now. May as well start growing a mustache boys...

I found an Armada fleet on Craigslist about a month ago (2 cores, 2 fighter sets, 1 rebel transport and 1 assault carriers) for $125. I jumped on that as a birthday gift for my cousin and to boost my own fleet. I saw he was also selling Legion, and I got the bundle for $150. He was basically giving Legion away at that point.

I'm glad to have it, and have familiarized myself with the system, but it's not as appealing to me as IA is. Although I do have some nice minis to supplement my IA minis.

So n=1 and all, but what I've seen in my local community is little overlap between 40K and Legion players. While nearly every 40K player I know does play multiple similar games (i.e. Warmahordes, Guildball, etc) and new ones come and go as the most prevalent game, Legion doesn't seem to be a big draw for that group.

Instead, it's the Star Wars community that's picked it up. The same folks that have bought into X-Wing (and Armada and IA but those are not really active in my area) got into Legion. I can't imagine that's particularly healthy for a game like Legion.

Edit: it certainly hasn't been healthy for IA as the popularity and perceived accessibility of X-Wing means there were way fewer people investing time and money on the game and harder to find people to champion and organize IA events.

I bought it to play with my one friend. I opened it, started reading the rules, and literally thought...ya this isn't for me! IA is my only mistress. LOL. Then I tried to sell it to recoup my cost and I've been stuck on it for a while.

ya that's what I figured. I mean I want a deal too when buying used, but don't feed me some bullsh-it. And I thought what you did, it's for sale for whatever I want right? LOL

Yes Legion is that popular. There is a multi thousand user Discord chat that can be really hard to follow as there is so much chatter about the game. Since the Clone Wars announcement it has only grown in popularity. I think there was an initial hype and buy in for it, then people petered out, but the community had enough members as a whole to survive and since then it has slowly built its way back up. My local community has a healthy player base, much better than I was ever able to build for IA anyway. They filled 64 seats at the Las Vegas Open and now did he same at Adepticon this past weekend, both events confirmed to double in size for next year.

As for 40k players, a few friends of mine have been playing 40k for the past decade and they just jumped ship to Legion including selling off their 40k armies. Not sure how it works across the globe, but that is my local community.

I bought a core and it's been fun so far. I think the thing people forget about Legion is the core is so **** cheap. Honestly even for half price I'd rather just go buy my own core, especially if the person has already glued figures together or started painting it. The core is also an insane value for Legion. To buy it all individually would cost around 180 Canadian, double the price of the core, and that is without Vader/Luke (which only come in the core).

I think sometimes people confuse local dead area with ded gaem globally. They just released the new 'regionals' type tournament list as well for Legion and it has double what IA did across Canada, if not triple. Haven't even looked at the states but the list was loooong.

The other thing to remember about Legion is that it is still pretty young, only 1 year old. How healthy was the IA playerbase after its first year? I think it took a few years for it to gain some steam and especially to build up to the point we have it at today/had it at for the past few worlds.

How was it decided who got to be which faction?

I don’t remember if it was always random or assigned by the tournament organizers. I do know I rolled for at least the first round.

There was one tournament that deviated slightly: once you played a side that was your side the whole tournament. In that event it was different enough it was advertised in advance.
