Are Curled Paw acrylic proximity mine markers tournament legal?
Tournament legal or not?
Negative.
From the Tournament rules. pg 5
Quote
Players must use only official X-Wing components in tournament play, with the following exceptions for third-party replacements (so long as they clearly convey the information required):
- Nonessential components such as indicators
- Range rulers that match the dimensions of an official range ruler or a particular section of an official range ruler.
- Maneuver templates that match the dimensions of official maneuver templates. Note that players must have a set of maneuver templates with the center line available to resolve certain maneuvers and actions
Determining the legality of any questionable third-party tokens, range rulers, and maneuver templates is the marshal’s responsibility.
Obstacles and Devices are considered Essential Objects, and do not fall under the first item of "nonessential components" as outlined on pg 4.
QuoteObjects (Essential)
Objects are punchboard such as ship bases, obstacles, and devices.
These are considered essential components (see page 5), and players must bring them in the quantity their list requires.

your opponent has to agree as well.
had this come up at the Kentucky Hyperspace trial. guy wanted to use 3rd party obstacles in my round 1 match, scooped and gave me a 200-0 before we even started

That’s a shame. They are effectively the same as the card board. Probably ruined his experience. I get being a stickler on rules and using it to gain advantage, but I’d rather see someone win on skill then something petty as “I don’t play with 3rd party obstacles “

The reason they are not permitted though is because it cannot be guaranteed that they are in fact the same as the cardboard without doing a component check each game.

Which I understand, but it’s been shown that there is more variance in FFGs own cardboard templates than acrylic. fFGs stance though is that variance is fine as it’s their own product. I do believe since 2.0 the variance had lowered quite a bit though.

Advantage? This isn't a possible misinterpretation of a rule or a twisting of it to try to use a loophole. Its a flat out, not allowed, cut and dry rule that isn't up for interpretation. And the petty thing to me seems more like the guy who pouted that he couldn't use them and refused to play.
If FFG updated the tournament rules and said that 3rd party obstacles and devices are allowed, then great, so be it, but unlike maneuver templates and range rulers, they dont make allowances for it. It clearly states those are essential, and you must use official essential components.
No argument from me there.

Why not both? When I've used a scratchbuilt ship before I always know it's unofficial and technically illegal I always bring the real model I'm proxying. Just bring the real obstacles and ask if your opponent minds the plastic ones.
There is a tournament rule that you can request to use the same templates as your opponent though. So he shouldn't have quit playing, should have just gone "Fine, then we'll both use yours".

That's just it. The opponent did mind, and he either didn't bring the real ones, or pouted and didn't want to play with the real ones. Which only raises the suspicion about the 3rd party ones.

This is what I'm saying: if you know you're using illegal stuff, bring legal copies, and use them if your opponent has any issues. It's been chill for me every time.
