Is deranged. There are no rules.

Straight off, I can't see him winning any awards any time soon, I think there's too many hard counters. The price he needs to be to do enough work is also extremely prohibitive, making squad balance particularly difficult.

But I'd love to be wrong. So if anyone at all has enjoyed using this mad thing and is happily taking him to local stores, or higher (indrawn breath) , then please share :)

Also if anyone has him on an Echo Location map with AdvS, then I'd love to see that .

I used him tonight, in one game only, in possibly the most inadvisably lunatic way. Went stupidly bad, because I yolo'd a lock to 1 hard through debris to rotate to OutmaTorps to show off on the 1st engage - 1 hit for double stress. A nd then stupidly well, because the dice decided variance be damned and he practically solo'd Drea and 2 Bounty Hunters before dying .

So now I'm considering taking this to a store tourney at the weekend, for laughs.

But I may chicken out and take the faithful Fenn Four instead, the prizes are surprisingly good....

The Butterfly Effect

(68) Fenn Rau [Fang Fighter] (3) Swarm Tactics Points: 71

(44) Zealous Recruit [Fang Fighter] Points: 44

(54) Dalan Oberos [StarViper-class Attack Platform] (12) Proton Torpedoes (6) Outmaneuver (10) Advanced Sensors Points: 82

Total points: 197

Yes, I know who Guri and Old Teroch are :D

You really have to get Dalan on the table to see what an absolutely immense bully he is against anything moving before him. Gosh he melts fast though...

The number of options he has when stress free is ridiculous. Which is where the management of his ability and AdvS, as you switch one for the other, also becomes slightly ridiculous.

Feels like it's worth a go. With a ship like this, similar to Echo, I'm not as bothered by Init as I am with say, I1 RZ-2s boosting past my Recruits. I'm on the verge of feeling like 82pt value could be reached... with superhuman luck and ability...

So not by me. Or maybe anyone. But still.

My son brought this conundrum to me. I asked him what we should fly in Hyperspace next. This is what he gave me.

Technically, he gave me Dalan with Virago, Shield Upgrade and AdvS. Which I was tempted by, with (omg the points) Predator on top.

But he's just going to faff around on his own, spending big money, doing nothing effective, until Fenn and Recruit are out of the way.

So Outmanoeuvre, he can still faff and get a mod as reward. ProTorps because he really has to actually try and hurt things. Doing it at R2/R3 while the Fangs bomb in, seems even better. Taking a green dice away while you do it, having AdvS a lock into a 3 hard that you just rotated on, is positively cruel.

Wise opponent traps and nukes him. Possibly with the help of some higher Init or a decent fistful of spare ships.

But hey, we have Fenn and a half to do stuff as well.

At this point, I am interested in literally any Dalan Viper experiences, not just lists. He really is quite hysterical.

Edit. My other idea was to swap AdvS out for an Autopilot drone. A spanner in the oppoments works, while giving Dalan that Coord kick before it explodes. But I couldn't be bothered to borrow one and work out how to use it. Struck me as a funny choice to give someone.

Well always great to see a fellow fan of the crazyness a Starviper can pull off XD. I'm not a great of the Dalan myself (he has a severe stress problem in a platform that deals badly with stress) but Guri, oh sweet Guri, she is just a riot. Anyway there is a list you might be interested:

Balls to the wall

Guri (63) Advanced Sensors (10)

Ship total: 73 Half Points: 37 Threshold: 3

Dalan Oberos (StarViper) (54)
Ship total: 54 Half Points: 27 Threshold: 3

Fenn Rau (68)
Ship total: 68 Half Points: 34 Threshold: 2

Total: 195

As the title says, you need to be truly bonkers and ride the sweet wave of dice variance if you want to enjoy flying this list but nothing is as good as when you one shot a ship with Fenn and Guri after barrel rolling out of their arc at range one ๐Ÿ˜ƒ ๐Ÿ˜ƒ . You need the 5 points bid to move second in a tournament setting but if you are playing casually, you can add predator to Dalan and/or fearless to Fenn for more sweet modifiers. Just fly it with the following motto in head and you will be fine: it is better to not get shot at all than risking a shot that might get you killed . These guys are ninjas and you win by being an opportunistic bastard not a brave warrior ;) Kill one, outfly them for the rest of the game!

Have fun.

Hobs

I like your way of thinking very much, cheers!

Ninjas indeed :D

I'm intrigued by this, I didn't find it too bad to deal with at all. Although having 2 stress was problematic :D

Having both 1 and 2 speed banks, into boost/bendy roll + focus OR Dalans party trick, felt pretty good.

What kind of circumstances tend towards the terrible for you?

I've been dealing with stress on the Fangs a lot recently, the TIE/v1 also. I avoid it like the plague on a Defender and various other platforms, where it can be crippling. Being able to clear it on a hard turn is huge, but the Fangs are also quite limited by it overall, the lack of 1 speed moves to shed it is awkward, you need some space. Likewise on the v1, the dial is fabulous, but being limited to 1 speed moves or straights to clear stress is also a heavy consideration, basically the opposite of the Fang, don't let them catch me in the open.

For me, every ship gets kinda ganked into predictability by stress. Even great ones like those 2. Having a couple different speed turns to shed it, followed by reposition if bailing out, feels pretty handy, in my book.

I mean, you are right that Dalan is quite problematic in picking it up so readily. I prefer to stay stress free as much as possible, in order to keep my opponent on their toes, but you can't help it with him. So it does require some very intense planning and necessary risks.

Afterburners could be good on him as you can rotate then boost or boost then rotate which can lead into crazy positions.

A good point. Also opens up a 3 bank boost when needing to hard bail while stressed.

I only fired one (useless single modded) torpedo last night and he was still quite dangerous, thanks to Outmanoeuvre, R1 and silly goodness from the dice. Made me think about dropping them. But I do like the threat of them, giving my opponent a solid reason to divert their attention from Fenn.... If they don't, bam!

More bid would also be super useful though and the lock is not particularly easy to come by...

I never really considered this pilot before, but this conversation is changing that. It actually looks like a lot of fun.

Building upon what has been written above, I want to try this:

Old Teroch (56)
Predator (2)

Guri (63)
Predator (2)
Advanced Sensors (10)

Dalan Oberos (StarViper) (54)
Predator (2)
Afterburners (6)
Total: 195

...yes. I did. Of course, exactly that.

sneaks 3 hard template from behind back and gently replaces in tray

Had a rough time with Dalan today. Didn't fly the list particularly well. Had atrocious dice, all day, and it threw me. Normally, reset, find new angles, mitigate and take advantage on the swing. Swing never came and I got a bit fed up tbh, started playing impatiently. I was close to being 3-1 rather than 1-3 and maybe could have turned it if I hadn't contracted dice salt, (however justifiably!).

But Dalan was actually really good. We came soooo super close to beating 5 RZ-2s. (2 hits on 15 dice in the last 2 engagements, into the remaining 1.5 A's, then we lost Fenn to 3 dice).

The problem is, he is absolutely a massive bully. It was kind of too easy for my opponents to turn the Initiative on me, since my lists preferences are so obvious.

When we did manage to get him safely attacking the lower Init ships, he (could've/should've) tore holes in them. Killed a couple droids, an MGT, put quite a bit of hurt on the I1 RZ-2s, all with lame dice. We did make sure practically all of our shots were single modded, which the AdvS helped with SO much.

He does have one huge advantage over Guri, in that he has focussed dice at any range. Guri did kill him.... tbf.... at R2 with her natural dice and single mod.....

But then the Zealous Recruit exploited Guri's no focus and tore her to pieces from range 2/3, where she couldn't escape (no AdvS). Dalan did some decent defending at R3 in our 1st few turns of our 1st game. Also used his focus to kill Midnight from R2/3, with Outmanoeuvre.

The ceiling is high. AdvS, linked actions and his rotate are all quite counter productive. He can really make it work and do wonderful things, but it's so tricky to get the most from it, especially while trying to anticipate higher Init and/or boost.

The good thing is that he doesn't get one shotted, if you keep him relatively safe. He gets hurt really badly, you pray for a non awful crit maybe. After that, you can generally find a place where you can reset him. The trick is knowing when to keep him open, so you don't end up without the options at the wrong time and becoming quickly dead. So I did get a chance to learn something about using him today, flipping him around and AdvSing more than enough to be entertained by his movement and action choices.

If not his dice.

For my list here, dropping the Torps, bringing Old T in and a 6pt bid will work wonders.

I wanted Dalan to be a distraction, and he was. But he needs to be ignored and allowed to grab the double mods. Old T would let me split and threaten different areas much better. I'll fly it again at some point, and feel like it will actually be fairly decent.

Not to hijack, because I am here for repositioning shenanigans, and I've been eye-balling Dalan for a while, having had great fun with Guri in the past... but I've been running the /v1 a bit recently and having a ball with a stress free, multi-reposition, multi-action build that has been doing shockingly well. Not meta breaking or anything, but certainly plays in a similar vein to good ol' Dalan here.

I had always bypassed Dalan to and then got teased so hard when I played his quickbuild at new players escalation night... they gave him the illicit Contraband Cybernetics! It's not on him otherwise! (Caution about accumulating to much stress though)

Thanks for this discussion group!

Sloop into rotate+roll+focus, yes please! Maximum drift!

Possibly needs Jabba nearby....

My hyperspace list:

New Squadron

(63) Guri [StarViper-class Attack Platform]
Points: 63

(54) Dalan Oberos [StarViper-class Attack Platform]
(10) Advanced Sensors
Points: 64

(54) Han Solo [Customized YT-1300 Light Freighter]
(6) Lando's Millennium Falcon
(2) Trick Shot
(2) Tobias Beckett
(4) Boba Fett
Points: 68

Total points: 195

Dalan with advance sensor and make action before stress.

Han Solo with Tobias + bobafett and gas cloud... You deploy everywhere without damage.

My roommate/primary opponent has been out of town so I haven't gotten the chance to use him, but I did do some maneuver practicing, just to see what he can do. He's effin nuts. I caan barely describe it, he practicly just stays where he is and rotates, or backs up and moves side to side, wide swinging out of enemy arcs, but staying at range 1. Take a forward right barrel roll, followed by a 3 bank to the left and boost with after burners and you pretty much take a 2 forward and rotate 90 degrees to the right, I think, im doing this in my head away from the table. regardless, its dumb and I love him.

I want an astromech slot. And I want to fill that thing with my lil buddy R4. And I want to live the rest of my days happily 1 turning until I die.
