AGOT and Warhammer Invasion

By Jux69, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Hey guys I was just wondering if any of you AGOT LCG players also play or have played Warhammer Invasion LCG. I am thinking of getting a copy of W:I to play after our AGOT sessions.

How does it compare? It seems like WI is not nearly as deep as AGOT in terms of mechanics, timing, strategy etc. If I am already playing "the only game that matters" is there any point to getting W:I also?

If you enjoy the warhammer world then its worth it. If you don't feel like painting a big army then its worth it.

The main differences as I see it is that W:I is a lot more tactical from game to game then AGoT is. In AGoT i've built my deck to max a strategy (generally). In W:I i've added cards so that I can play devlopments, not get decked out (a loss condition in W:I), and to try some combos so from game to game i see and play lots of different things.

Thanks Lars. Actually the main reason I would get W:I is because I love the Warhammer universe, more so 40K but the fantasy realm is cool too. I was thinking of just getting the core set and the assault on ulthuan expansion to start. How good is the balance between the six races with just these starter decks? Is getting three of every card as important as it is in AGOT?

getting 3 of every card isn't as important especially since in the core set and the expansion there are a number of cards that are 3x.

The only thing you would really be missing in your desired purchase is skaven (destruction only neutrals) and they don't drastically impact the enviornment (they basically add ways/boons to corruption, which DE and Chaos like and have undercosted units for orc rush). There are only like 4 of the first 6 CPs out so it wouldn;t be impossible to get them all later, especially once the new 3x of each card CPs start to roll out.

for balance issues i'd direct you to W:I obards themself. there is a lot of good dicussion there (like how judgment of verona kills everyone the first time they play against it, but with a slight (and useful) tweak to your playstyle its most a non-issue).

Great, thanks again Lars!

From a fun only standpoint, they are fairly balanced - all six factions are pretty good and they give you a couple of ways to win. Getting 3X isn't that important, although a few of the power rares are 1X (luckily, one of them is reprinted in the Elves expansion you talked about). That being said, you will actually go through some of the commons and actually want more (i.e. Warpstone Evac) and if you happen to want to play, say, two destruction decks you might want more (Orc runs some Chaos cards, etc.).

If you ever decide to get even slightly competative, you really need the chapter packs, as Skaven are winning everything right now. Unlike aGoT the factions really are not as balanced right now - maybe since it is a new game (aGoT wasn't that balanced early either!). Destruction is WAY better than Order.

All in all, a pretty fun game. To be honest I liked the old Warhammer Warcry CCG better, especially for the 'feel' of the universe. But the mechanics of this game are strong to be sure (as almost any Eric Lang game is).

In a lot of ways, WH is a simplified Thrones. Take away the plot mechanic (to me the most impressive and defining thing about AGoT) and the two are very similar, but you lose the control and strategy a plot deck gives you (which is probably why some make the observation that WH is more tactical, as it's certainly less strategic), making you a little more reliant on luck of the draw. If you enjoy Thrones, you'll likely enjoy WH, but for me it's on a completely different level - one that I enjoy playing with my friends but with constant reminders during gameplay that AGoT is so much deeper and offers way more opportunity for creative, inspiring play.

WH may improve in that regard over time, however, and some of the aforementioned balance issues will likely clear up, but some less than reassuring decisions have been made with regard to tournament rules that swing the balance even more in favor of Desctruction/Rush decks (50 minute time limit for best of 3?). I would imagine that growing pains like this are common for new games? Given the choice, I'm always going to prefer Thrones by a long shot, but for a light and casual change of pace, it can be quite fun. I've heard from a few Thrones players being severely disillusioned by the shortfalls of WH in the comparison and discarding it, but by and large, most players who have tried both seem to enjoy WH on some level.

Let me second the fact that Plots are probably my favorite part about aGoT (and I have played A LOT of card games). Okay, maybe the source material...but after that the plots :)
