While a friendly ship at range 0–2 defends, if it is not in the attacker’s bulls-eye , you may spend 1 force . If you do, change 1 crit result to a hit result or 1 hit result to a focus result.

what is the timing?

Are you still considered "while defends" during the time you roll defense dice and could modify the attack dice at this time? Or is it that you must modify the attack dice at the modify attack dice step.

"While defends" seems a bit ambiguous.

from rules reference:

DEFENDER
The ship that is chosen during the Declare Defender step of the Declare
Target step of an attack is the defender.
• That ship remains the defender until after all “after attacking” and “after
defending” abilities have resolved during the Aftermath step.

Feedback would be much appreciated.

The rules for modifications during an attack are thus:

1-Attacker Rolls Reds.

2-Defender Mods Red dice.

3-Attacker Mods Red dice.

4-Defender Rolls Greens.

5-Attacker Mods Green dice.

6-Defender Mods Green dice.

So Lumi would trigger in step 2 directly after Reds are rolled.

There are only a few things that come into play after step 6, Crack Shot being the one that springs to mind.
