Wilson Richards and Gates

By tazbro, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Don't know if this has been asked before. Tried searching and didn't see this.....

During movement phase, Wilson Richards moves to a location with a gate and monster. Fights monster and wins.
During the Arkham Encounter phase does he have the option to take on an odd job instead of encountering the gate?

Thanks

I don't think so. Gates are powerful things. They would suck him into that other world.

Gates replace locations, so he doesn't have the option to work an odd job "instead of having an encounter," because he couldn't have an encounter in the first place!

Are you sure? I know Ancient Ones are a little too busy to be worrying about gate cleaning and maintenance on their own, so they've probably budgeted a few bucks for people like Wilson to do it for them. gui%C3%B1o.gif

When your Phase 3 Arkham Encounters rolls around, you follow either the "No Gate" or "Gate" titled paragraph from the rules. With No Gate, you normally draw a card, but certain locations (Science Building for example) allows another choice. Wilson adds a third choice, gain $1 (though normally it's just a second choice, often preferrable to drawing a card, especially at the nastiest locations).

Dan's response makes the most sense to me.

I respect the fact that some of you folks are alot more familiar with the rules interpretations.

No disrespect Tibs, Let me see if I understand....
If a gate replaces a location, then that location doesn't exist?
Example, At the Historical Society you get an encount that sends you to the woods.
If a gate had replaced the woods location, then you don't move?

Just trying to make sense out of the wording in the rules and Wilson Richards ability.

thanks

"Gates replace locations" has been the long-standing mantra for why you can't take a random encounter or a special location encounter when there's a gate on that location. Also, you can enter a gate that's opened on a closed location. Once the gate is closed, you're subject to the "closed location" effect.

Clearly, the explanation doesn't always make sense:

  • If an encounter moves you to the Woods but there's a gate on the Woods, you still go there. If you're supposed to have an encounter as well, your encounter is to enter the gate.
  • If a mythos card opens a gate at the Woods and there is already a gate at the Woods, you still get a monster surge. It's not like nothing happens because the Woods technically "isn't there." Otherwise there would be no monster surges.

Thanks Tibs and Dan.

It sounds like the rule is ... if there is a gate there, he goes through.
He can only use his odd job ability if there is no gate on the location.

You're welcome!

And... it's Dam ;)

Ooops!

Thanks Dam.
