Why does Roland Banks has bonus focus points?

He has all of his stat points used, so he should have 1 focus, but he has 3. My question is: WHY?! Bonus focus is usually given to investigators with a bad ability but Roland's abilities (especially the clue one) are exellent and he has great starting possesions. So again, WHY?!

I suspect it's because Roland's ability ISN'T as good as it looks. It's nice not to be empty on clues, and it's nice not to be broke, but those abilities only activate when you're very low on either, and only replenish you one per round. Roland's ability will never give him enough to seal a gate or enough to buy an Elder Sign, for example.

Now, what I want to know is why they didn't dock Patrice Hathaway a point! She has two abilities that are unimaginably good. I house-rule her clue-spend ability to only work on skill checks (and not sealing), and I still found it necessary to cut her focus down a point in order to make her fair.

Isn't her second ability even more powerful? A clue for every gate is bad enough, but 5 clues when there are 9 doom tokens? okay, whatever... she might be more broken than Daisy

Oh without a doubt. When I first read her spending ability I was concerned. Then I read her other ability and I peed my pants.

Somehow, things like Q-U's dust deck are far less threatening when you have Patrice on the team...
