How long have you played X-Wing?

By Greedo_Sharpshooter, in X-Wing

I became aware of the game and played a demo right after it launched. I only played it casually at first but then started playing competitively right around when rebel aces came out.

But 2.0 is killing my enthusiasm for the game as they expand it exponentially. It used to be a fun little game whose scale and time to play made it great for tournaments. Now it's a super massive game demanding an awareness of the capabilities of many different factions to be competitive.

Just so much investment required now that the pick up and play novelty of it has died for me.

I hear u Sekac. 2.0 has expanded in scale and complexity very quickly. coming into 2.0 i was expecting streamlined and easy to apply game mechanics.

7 factions has really altered the landscape significantly. The game has been flooded with new and sometimes confusing stuff.

im sensing a fracture in the community between casual 'old school' players and brand new players hungry for the newest toys ffg has to offer.

ffg is trying to walk the line between retaining existing players and attracting new players.

iv got a foot in both camps. ive got my old 1.0 rebel, imperials and scum fleets. im a semi competitive player. im trying to keep up with the changing factions and keep competitive on a budget. im buying selectively and borrowing what i can for squads i like.

as long as i can play what i like wout re-investing too much i'll plod along. the attraction for me has always been list building first and then testing my squads against good players. im still here because the game has good appeal for me... for now.

I only started last October with 2.0

Play Armada for a couple of years now, but never really felt like also playing X-wing untill 2.0 came along giving me a nice clean spot to start out with in only buying into 2.0 stuff and playing Hyperspace.

It'll be one week on Monday.

Since mid-2015. A lot less since 2.0 dropped.

It's already turning into exactly what FFG said 2.0 was supposed NOT to turn into: Combo-Wing. A la GW.

My first game came in 2017 at gencon.. I got into it after gencon 18.. So not that long for me.

Around the time the Interceptor was released, wave 3. Aces box seemed to come soon after that and wave 4 too.

I was there at Wave 1. I heard about it coming and how awesome it was, but resisted for a bit. I think I started in January of 2013.

Since the first millennium falcon came out off and on. Lived through fat han, tie swarms, palp aces, phantom , pancake dominance.

Got into armada

Went to runewars minis and got burned badly by ffg.

Last purchase/game was c-roc before just this weekend picking up a core and conversions.

I had 3 factions, now I have 5.

Imagine my surprise.

Since the middle of 2016, started with HotAC.

Since wave 4, in 1.0.

Around 5 years ago?

Still a very fun game. 😃 Not frustrating like other online games.

January 3rd 2013

There was no store aware of this game much when I started, so no close access to the special December event which gave wave 2 ships to the winners.

I didn't like Vassal much when I saw it for the first time around March 2013 but I eventually participated in a small tournament hosted by mrfroggies a bit later and got hooked both online and IRL.

I got into the game around waves 3-4. Definitley before the Decimator release. So about 4 years.

3 years ago exactly, but I'm not sure for how much longer. 1.0 had its issues yes, but 2.0 is starting become similar. Sure, TLT, wookies, and ghost fenn are all gone, but so are a lot of the tools that primary arc only ships took to stay more consistent with their dice. Now the variance is right front and center, so my favorite style of play is sort of getting bullied out of the game.

I'm sure this is going to be extremely inflammatory but due to several reasons, the current 2.0 meta is just not a fun and engaging experience. Gambling sucks, so I'm not a fan of "dice variance" being as big of a game aspect as it is; especially as the best way to combat variance is to bring as many ships and dice as possible so as to reach a normalized dice distribution. Move + focus + shoot again and again and again with sometimes 10 ships on board is far from the game that I want to play. I think that Jan 28 will have damaged the game in the long-term (many months) unless they make some changes soon.

Was in our FLGS looking for some board game to play with my friend and brother. Saw X-Wing on the wall, played the demo 5 mins later. Walked out with the starter and 1 of each of the scum ships they had. It was right after wave 8 released. Fell in love with the Mist Hunter right away.

I got the core in December of 2012 (gift for myself)! I didn't start playing in tournaments till wave 4 though.
