FLGS stock of Wave 3

By outerrimrebel, in X-Wing

I went to my FLGS intending to spend some of my hard earned cash on Wave 3, only to find out that they had order roughly 4 each of the two squadron packs on none of the individual ships. They sold out of the squadrons packs and it was stated to me that since 'they didn't know the health of the local community that they didn't order more.' I was a little shocked by this statement, this store has always had a pretty healthy community, sure people might not constantly be playing there but they've sold out of most of the second edition stock. I did order Servants of Strife, a Vulture and the Sith Infiltrator while I was there.

In all fairness this store does specialize in MtG, has a healthy 40k community and Keyforge/L5R has drawn off a couple of players.

Has anyone else seen this? Their FLGS sitting on a ton of First Edition stock and barely stocking Second Edition.

my FLGS does have a large volume of 1st ed stock. they do try to order all the new stuff coming out but will pass on some of the rereleases if they have the 1st ed ones on hand. They are tending to order in smaller quantities these days. but I don't blame them. They usually have enough for those of us that want them.

Mine doesn't have hardly any 1st ed stuff left. It was almost all gone by last December. The community is a decent size here in Omaha, last time I checked there were at least two shops that had X-wing communities meeting weekly in town. As far as 2nd ed product, they try to carry a few of everything, but it is far from all they carry so it only gets one of their shelves. Sparta Games in Omaha is the one I'm talking about if anyone wants to know. Good food, and good people behind the counter. They even do a pre-order discount if you become a member of their little store club loyalty thing.

Not for me. The FLGS I most often frequent ordered 10+ of everything from wave 3. They have a few stragglers from first edition hanging up still but second edition is strong there. They carry pretty much everything and pretty much fully stock the FFG Star Wars games. They host at least two nights a week of FFG Star Wars games.

We have 2 FLGS, one is a full on game store (the one I talk about the OP) the other is more of a comic book shop/land of misfit toys place. The only other place 'locally' that stocks X-wing is the Barnes & Noble which I didn't look to see if they had Wave 3 yet. But if I'm going to pay retail I'm going to pay it where I play. I'm honestly shocked that they haven't done a blow first edition out sale, which this place did for Imperial Assault and Armada.

Wish we had larger crowds for it here in the Tampa area. The FLGS still has some 1e stock, which is nice when I need to pick up an extra model at a discount. Wave 3 sold fairly well, but only 7 players for the launch party 😕

im thinking the lack of availability of product is hurting the game. we still are feeling a bit of a hangover effect from the transition into 2.0. Distribution issues may be compounding the problem.

time will tell but it feels like the game is teetering on the brink in some areas.

if im a new player im probably feeling a bit overwhelmed by what i need to get to get into the game. i can choose from 7 factions but i cant get hold of all of the ships i want to play with right away.

if im an established player i have a decent collection of ships already but am in a holding pattern to get the 2.0 components i need to play what i want. The biggest frustration here is that FFG continue to spread upgrades throughout factions i dont even play.

Some X-wing players are really hamstrung by factors beyond their control. I'm a loyal player and I love the game but my patience is slowly but surely eroding. Like many here Iv invested lots in the 1.0 version and am now understandably a bit gun shy about throwing lots more money at the game to keep playing what i want to play. I sat on the sidelines for several months when 2.0 hit stores because i wasnt too sure about 2.0 but then I jumped into it and assembled everything i needed to play scum. I also 'split' a rebel conversion kit because i really needed the Moldy Crow Title for Palob. I positive spin-off of this was that I now have enough components to field some pretty solid rebel squads.

I dont own all the conversion kits because i dont want to play every faction. If the 1.0 experience taught us anything it was to buy selectively. i own scum, rebel and galactic empire ships aplenty. i really only want to play scum and rebel squads. each to their own. its a strength of x-wing. u can choose which faction u want to play. well, that used to be a strength now i think it could be more of a hindrance.

I'm a semi-serious player who enjoys playing in tournaments. My goal is always to be competitive and win as many games as i can. I study the 'meta' and enjoy analysing top squads that are doing well in the big events.

I am feeling concerned about the future of the game in my area.

This is one of those cases where it’s perfectly fine to take your money elsewhere. Ordering just 4 of each shows they are out of touch with the game and the community.

Might be good idea next time though to call into the store a week in advance to reserve your copies so they know to order extra.

Still got a ton of 1st ed. Stock sitting around, although with hyperspace format changes I suspect it will slowly begin to disappear. (A-wings and B-wings and interceptors sitting around).

sadly I think the biggest offenders are the rebel transport and scum gozanti. I suspect there gonna sit for quite awhile. (Even on sale)

My store ordered a TON of Wave 3, when I walked into the store there was a mountain of the Squadron Packs and Sith Infiltrator. Probably at least 10 of each one. No idea on stock of the rest but I myself bought 2 Republic Squad packs, 2 Republic Arcs, and 1 Aethersprite.

My store still has a decent amount of 2nd edition stuff left, wish they would discount it but some of it still sells.

Overall we have game night once a week with some people meeting up on other days sometimes. Also this is for the Northwest Indiana area.

There is only one small game store that sold X-wing in my area and they do most of their trade in MTG and 40K/Sigmar. X-wing really dried up there during the transition to 2.0 and I think they’ve been stuck with some Legion stuff lately, so last time I was in there the guy said “no more Star Wars” and they clearanced everything left.

That leaves me with B&N, which was several months late with wave 2, so who knows when they’ll get wave 3. This left me going the route of FFG preorders for the last few waves, which have been handled amazingly by FFG, but does stink when you want to just run out and grab a few more ships. I guess they’ll all be on Amazon soon.

If your FLGS isn't carrying anything I'd look at the discount online retailers before paying full price to FFG.

I had considered that since they offer 10% off with 'pre-orders' but decided to roll the dice and see if they were available today. Clearly my dice came up blank, blank and blank.

My FLGS is mostly gaming space (thank goodnes!) so there is just a small endcap dedicated to X-wing. We take preorders seriously. If you don't tell the owner you want to buy the ship, plan on not having it for a while. But if you put in your preorder, you're 99% certain to get it on time (distributor problems do sometimes arise that are out of her control).

Preordering is the way to go.

When it comes to getting anything from an FLGS, pre-ordering is a necessity.

For one, it guarantees that you will get what you want. More importantly, it allows the owners to gauge how much stock they actually need to order. If no-one tells them they want something, they aren't going to order lots of it on the off-chance that there will be a rush of buyers.

our FLGS hasn't been able to get ANY of 2.0 in, despite the local players asking after it. Apparently its to do with the UK distribution rather than the store not wanting to stock it

Point taken, with Wave IV I'll remember to pre-order the Droid Bomber.

Full stock here. V1 ships are almost all sold out. They blew them all out at cost which actually got new players in.

That was a very smart move on your part. Now if my FLGS would just do that, maybe generate some interest.

It is always an uphill climb. I gotta get back out regular and start playing at the LGS again.

Swapped most of my old MTG cards for store credit, and I've still got a healthy balance since they only had 1x GotR, 1x Aethersprite, 2x ARC left. Well, they don't anymore. I might have picked up some Separatists stuff, but they didn't have any SOS in stock either. But I mean, I guess that implies they've been selling it. They seemed to have enough of waves 1/2 in stock.

If I know what I want I pre order. But this time I was up in the air. I wanted seps at first but didn't know how much would be needed (no points until release) so I waited. When the points were announced I felt like the investment was a bit steep.

So instead I went with the republic. Got lucky and picked up the squad pack, an Arc and one Aethersprite from my shop yesterday. I'll probably pick up another squad and two more Arcs over time.

If a store is setting on a lot of inventory of game X and that inventory is not moving, then they would be stupid to order more of game X. Just how retail works. The product has to move. Retail stores get burned badly when games transition to 2.0 and they have a lot of 1.0 stock. The old stuff just sits there because everyone wants the new stuff. It's a hard loss to take and really doesn't give a store confidence to keep that gaming going. Of course stores with healthy communities will stock it even if they have 1.0 stock left. They know all of it will sale eventually because they have the customers to buy it.

Healthy stock at the FLGS I went to. I assume the others nearby had similar... there's a lot of them around here.

Checked out a store. Had Striker, Z-95, ARC, Jedi Starfighter. No squadron packs, no vulture, no infiltrator.
