I’m writing a story about a scientist who is called to investigate the sudden expansion of the supermassive black hole in the center of the galaxy. In the meantime, he is working on a project. I asked John Jackson Miller himself what he could be working on and he said something to do with improving navicomputers. That meshes well on what I’m looking for as I want him to do something related to Hyperspace and navicomputers are used to make Hyperspace jumps. What could the scientist be working on in order to make navicomputers better or more efficient?
What could be done to improve navicomputer for Hyperspace?

Quantum entangling multiple navicomputers to allow for tighter and more efficient squadron/fleet jumps. Perhaps allowing the group to "draft" one another and travel at the speed of the fastest (rather than slowest) hyperdrive in the formation.

I love it! Thank you so much!!!
Perhaps something like a bastardization of Kwa infinity gate technology. Using some remnant(s) of them, perhaps collected from multiple former infinity gate locations. These few pieces, though not allowing instant transport, somehow via the ancient technology provide unknown alternative hyperspace travel paths. Perhaps even in relation to this blackholes size increase due to a failed experiment or equipment mishap? This hyperspace drive might have a huge power requirement, but provide a .75 or .5 drive rating.
There is also the Gree Hypergates, which also allowed for near instantaneous transport between them. I think they might of made use of pulsars or quasars, you'll have to check them out too.

I really like the entangled hyperdrive thing but I feel like it wouldn’t be necessary unless their was a ship like the Millenniums falcon whos 0.5 would get their an hour before a 1 or 2 would arrive. Most ships in military have Class 1’s and would likely arrive momentarily after one another.
Technology allowing hyperspace to ignore celestial objects when plotting courses, thus vastly reducing travel time as they can do a straightline path. Some kind of phasing technology to let the ship "step" out of phase with reality when getting close to a significant gravity well, and pass through harmlessly. This can open up "ghost/lost ships" from previous experiments into this technology. Or if you are a fan of the film Event Horizon, or the Babylon 5 film Third Space, they could wake up "something from beyond our understanding that dwelled within the space between reality" and introduce some kind of Old Ones, Cthulhu-esque plot elements.
He could make the computer compute faster.

Interesting but that might make hyperdrive travel from across the galaxy to an hour. It would revolutionize travel and like Timothy Zahn I like the 12+ hour travel time.

Doesn't mean he gets it to work, just that he's working on it, which is what you asked for, something for him to be working on. And if the way to make it work means "taking a shortcut through a literal **** dimension" well, that might not be cost effective, or something everyone is willing to do

Don't just look at it for military ops: consider the potential economic gains of using a Class 1 hyperdrive "guide" ship to lead packs of Class 3/4 transports.
Also, this will be the last time I respond to these posts from you. You seem to waffle on everything and dismiss every idea. It comes off as being trollish and a giant waste of time. You keep wanting the "just right" answer when it's just background and a "right now" answer should do.

Their is no need to get snippy. I just happen to love thinking about new tech ideas but yes I’m very picky and I will stop now.
How about...
He is researching how to revolutionize hyperdrives and hyperspace travel by using kyber crystals as a power amplifier or a power stabilizer.
As Hyperspace shadows are a big danger better detection and avoidance of these events.
If i recall, there are some celestial space creatures that could travel far faster than current technology, though the Kwa and Gree tech probably is as quick. Perhaps harnessing these creatures or befriending them, extracting a specific organ or bio essence item, building a ship around a juvenile of the species, what have you to propell a ship or ride a wave of their energy release like a surfer. Or just following in their wake or draft them to slingshot a ship.
