We Must Be Slipping....

By ktom, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

So, it occurs to me that Regional season has started. This past weekend, the LCG Mega-event at the FFG Events Center was the first AGoT Regional of the season, which lasts the next two months....

...and no one has said anything about it?!?

Usually by now, we're in a wash of "good luck" messages, "what was the field?" messages and even "who won?" messages.

Was it just a busy weekend for the board community, did everyone travel to MN and thus wasn't around to post, or are we - as a community - just not as interested?

Oh, BTW: What was the field like? Who won?

Dobbler won with a lanni shadows deck. I believe he beat greyjoy winter in the finals. not sure the total numbers but greg went 3-0 in swiss and the top four was him and the 3 people he beat.

Luke won the melee with martell, there were 6 people i believe for the melee.

all the above is from facebook comments.

I honestly forgot about the regionals in MN until greg posted he was coming home from them.

the play mat is really nice.

And, you know, I get that. It is a lot easier to post to Facebook from smartphones, etc., than it is to post to the boards. But in terms of keeping the greater community informed and interested, it doesn't do much.

Just another example of how the community environment is changing to a more localized orientation. Not necessarily a bad thing, but different.

its funny though, I would have seen it faster if it was posted on here instead of on facebook even though I had access to the same info on facebook.

I had the misfortune of playing Greg's hyper shadow kneel deck twice (Lannister, of course). Once in the qualifiers and once again in the final round. First game I came close to beating him and would have likely done so if I just had some anti-kneel tech somewhere in my Martell deck. I went to the event center thinking I was too late to join the tournament but hoping to just play some casual games. As it turned out I was informed I was in time for the Joust portion if I was still interested, so went ahead and entered my Martell deck. The second game Greg basically played my deck for me. I really didn't get to do much of anything that game. This was my first tournament ever, so I went in wide-eyed and unassuming and some would say even a bit naive.

Not sure of all the decks that were present, but I know we had a couple Greyjoy Winters and at least one Stark deck. I was able to beat Jerusalem's Greyjoy Winter in a tightly contested game in the qualifiers (ended 15-13).

All in all it was fun meeting everyone and good to put a face to some of the names here on the forums. Greg (Dobbler) was a gracious champion and I wish him well at the next tournament.

I was left with the impression that Lannister is still the dominant house in the LCG environment at the moment.

As the fourth place finisher I walked away with a beautiful Martell painting and a sheet of uncut cards. All in all, I have to say it was a successful and fun experience for me.

Well, I'm very much interested in hearing accounts of people's matches if they'll share them It has just been a busy Monday morning so had no time to ask. And Regionals are very much on my mind, in part b/c of the organizing (but there's very little do right now with our joust event two months away) but more so that I'm being a little more deliberate and focused on my decks then I usual would be as I try to get one of them into decent enough shape with the precious few chances to test them that I will have between now and the NY joust. (Hmmm, maybe it's time I once again pester you off-line for a critique of my deck(s). happy.gif)

I do wish FFG would get the event details posted as we're only a couple weeks from the first of events happening.

With Lanni Shadows winning and further "confirming" most folks' belief that it is top dog, I wonder if people will be building decks that are intended to be well-rounded with a chance to beat all comers or if there will be substantial deck building bias towards anti-Lanni tech at the risk of being more vulnerable to other houses.

You're telling me!

Well, it's worth remembering that at GenCon 2009, Erick had a deck build with a heavy expectation of needing to tech against Lannister. It worked wonders for him - until he faced Greg's Greyjoy Winter in the finals. It probably won't pay to leave yourself too vulnerable to other Houses.

A good point, Letsgored. I obviously didn't build my deck to focus on Lanni tech, and even in hindsight I still would not make that a focus, since I like to be able to be reasonably competitive against any house. Just the fact I had none at all hurt me against Lanni. Things like "To be a Viper" would be good regardless of matchup (and I had none in my deck) or "He Calls it Thinking" (which I had two of but never drew in any of my games). I've since added 3x "To be a Viper" and another "He Calls it Thinking" to my deck to give it more flexibility.

Lanni is indeed strong, but I think it's still important to be able to matchup reasonably well with the other houses as well.

Sorry, since I was in contact with Dobbler through text and phone calls all weekend, I didn't think much about the lack of posting to the boards. Lol, I should have been helping everyone out there.

As far as the houses go, I find it interesting that Greg won, but appeared to be the only Lannister deck in the field.

I can relate. Last year was my first trip to gencon and first time competing in a tournament. Eye opening for sure, but what fun! I'm hoping to give a little better showing at GenCon this year. It's a great community and a great group of people who play the game.

well here kind of what happen

well this what happen not lunk but i think it was greg played fear of witer loss a power callenge to luke then on this turn he play the power reinforcement card did a power challege on luke tried to play make an example and luke callenled it with he calls it thinking witch he had to put it on on one of greg card becuase at this time he did have any martell chariters out right then he try to play red vangences but we saw that was his 2nd card for the turn right well gerg wins dom and get 13 power win the game with red weding we were patching up and luke and i were like wait you played 2 card last turn and would not win dom do to luke having 5 for dom due to the gold he had left over to gerg 4 because luke would not had to canneled the make an example nate was liek well if you did not see it then there nothing we could do other then start a new game but they did not want to so i got the short end do to having 4 power on my house and luke having 5 or something like that so those two go to the finle 4

that was the melle game gerg luke and i were in then luke and gerg went to the finly table where luke won when seth did a power challege so he could standed the red viper and do 3 challage agaist seth to win game

For finel game I was play grreyjoy winter right and keep a 3 card drop with a ton of one stg guy in hand knowing he had treat from the north (witch he played turn 2 on me ) in his plot deck so he jsut moped it up first game we played after turn 3 i could not draw another guy to bring out having the game won but gave gerg the time to come back and win

the game between me and seth for the table to see who was goign to the fnaly table was a summber barb rushdeck vs my greyjoy winter we both did tiem fo rraven turn oen and got our raven he went first and did not play his raven i was liek oki am not playing my raven card too and just a ton of guy with the crow eye he could not do a mill agist me to win i had board letting him do an power and li agist me just so he had power for me to still i stelth boith his guy was up to like 6 or 7 power right now right he valars m and i do fear of winter and save most of my guy he goes first makes it summer for his oen card that cool i still did not make it winter i play a guy and won 3 callege plue pull his other black raven from his hand next turn i think i played raise of the kerrken and made it winter with my one gold and too the game form there

the other game Seth made a HUGE play mistake. I believe both him and Shad were playing Stark. It was Winter, and Shad plaed The WInds of Winter (While it is Winter, opponent's characters get -1 STR. ) Seth had played The Power of Blood, but knelt Bran Stark to instead reveal "Threat From the North (Each character in play this round gets -1 STR.
If a character's STR becomes 0 or lower this round, that character is discarded from play (cannot be saved). )

he killed like 4 or 5 of his guy

ya some made calls and bad mistake but still had a ton of fun

p.s. sorry for all the spelling not my cup of tea

Anyway I can see pictures of the play mat?

Also, I'm really psyched for the Regionals. I plan on going to three! Despite playing the game for a couple of years, I'm fairly new the forums. I didn't know it was customary to say "good luck" and what not before big tourneys. That said, good luck to all those playing in the Regionals over the next couple of months! I'm looking forward to the write-ups of people's experiences.

Just a comment on Lanni Shadows. RedTerror built a Lanni Shadows Agenda deck a while back and it really wrecked all the decks in our meta. It wasn't unbeatable (I was able to rush it a couple of times with GJ Winter), but it was one of the most challenging LCG decks I have faced to date. That said, he used it in the last OCTGN tournament. In the US pairing he went 3-1 with his one lost being against Erick (the winner of the tourney). He then lost to Kuba in the first of the three rounds for the US/Europe match-ups.

Both Erick and Kuba were playing Lannister. When I asked him what happened, he told me that Shadows was too slow and took to long to set up before Lanni control kicked in. It would have been nice to see how his deck would have done against longclaw's or Twn2dn's Martell decks, but it seems like Lanni Shadows is extremely good against all Houses/deck except for strong Lanni uber-kneel decks.

It'll be interesting to see what other kinds of decks win Regionals in the upcoming weeks. Congrats to both Dobbler and Maester_LUke for their success!

I meant to respond in the other thread about the event yesterday, but I think I got sidetracked answering the question about seasons decks. I was really curious to know what the field was like though and what happened. Can anyone else who was there give some perspective on the player who was disqualified for having an illegal deck (story in the main AGoT)? It sounded like a bad situation, though the person who posted it here has never posted kind things about AGoT.

Thanks for posting this recap on the boards! As a new player and new to the forums it's helpful and interesting to hear about the tourney. Facebook be damned! I'm unable to attend Kublacon this year but hope to make it next year... and I should have more experience under my belt. That said... good luck everyone!

ktom we missed you up here in minnesota sorry you could not make it

lol.... I actually tried wishing Greg and everyone luck in his post about driving up to the event, just to generate some discussion on the boards about it.

As Bronson and I are trying to revive competitive Thrones in SoCal (or at least San Diego), I personally love reading tourney reports. They give me a lot of insight as to what's happening in the game in places where people are playing frequently enough to really understand the card pool. As I'm trying to get my decks put together for Kublacon, with minimal chances to actually play those decks beforehand, other people's thought on the card pool are very interesting to me. I must admit at times I don't feel I know enough to comment on such threads, but I still really enjoy reading them.

its one of those plots that I always slip back into a deck right before a big event and then take out for casual play.

Congrats to both - I admit to have followed it via Facebook as well (as I kicked all comers butt in Warstorm just to feel like I was there a little ;) ).

Catastrophe should have been the reprint...Fleeing just doesn't do it (I will say it again - characters have multiple hate plots like Valor, Wildfire, Threat...locations have one so-so plot). Sorry for the thread hijack! :)

Still 50/50 on Kubla which would be my only Regional. Good to see Lanni on top where they belong! :)

I am not sure what you mean I have never posted kind thing about AGoT. I have never posted anything about this game. My only post was about what things to buy to get started in the game and people where very helpful with that. I personally like this game a lot and want to get into it more.

Wow, I totally forgot that the first regionals was this past weekend! (I definitely fit into the category of "would have followed the rounds closely if updates were posted here rather than Facebook.")

Anyway, I too would like to see a tourney report, if one is possible without spoiling the decklist for the rest of the regionals season (though I'm guessing I can figure out what 90% of the cards were in the "Lanni shadows" deck lengua.gif). Also, I'm very interested to know what the playmat AND the cut sheets look like. Both prizes sound very cool.

The Martell melee decks sound interesting too...reinforcements, huh? Any other details, tidbits, or scraps of information for the masses?

And to all those who have upcoming regionals, good luck! (I hope that many of you can make it to the DC meta's tournament. It should be a very good event.)
