Unnatural Characteristics (require a rules clarification?)

By MKX, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

Its come up as some conjecture with the ruling here about the relationship of Unnatural Intelligence and the bonus to Int based skills

As written-

"Each time you apply this Trait to the same characteristic the bonus multiplier increases by 1

During Opposed Characteristic tests on a success the bonus multiplier is added to the degree of success."

The arguement centres around the Opposed test.

The bonus multiplier adds +1 degree of success for each level so for example-

Base stat of 50 Int, +10 Common Lore- Imperium, character rolls a 40 and has 2 success +1 success from Unnatural Int x 2 = 3 degrees of success

Or is it for example-

Base stat of 50 Int, +10 Common Lore- Imperium, character rolls a 40 and has 2 success x 2 from Unnatural Int x 2 = 4 degrees of successes

My ruling as a GM is that it is 4 degrees of success for the above example, so if say the same was applied to Dodge (+ Unat Ag x 2) vs someones Weapon/Ballistic skill, more successes equals more avoidance of the attack, HOWEVER, the argument centres around say, an unopposed Skill test - say Tech use or Scholastic/Common lores which aren't typically opposed by another player/NPC and the character should roll base stat, any success on the skill only add +1 degree of success.

"Each time you apply this Trait to the same characteristic the bonus multiplier increases by 1"

Ok, so since the first time you take unnatural agility you get Unnatural agility X2 it seems that Unnatural agility X1 is implicit in all characters without an unnatural multiplier. So how would you handle that?

I believe the proper use is the 3 degrees example, since the text says added and not multiplied .

Unnatural x2 = 1 dos

Unnatural x3 = 2 dos

Unnatural x4 = 3 dos

etc...

I read it as the bonus multiplier is added, meaning 2 degrees of success is added.

On the other nothing is added if it is not an opposed test, if you go strictly by the rules for RT.

Unnatural x2 = 1 dos

Unnatural x3 = 2 dos

Unnatural x4 = 3 dos

etc...

That is indeed how it works, as clarified in the Inquisitor's Handbook.

Actually, that's not the case.

As noted in the Rogue Trader rulebook, and on the sidebar on page 226 of The Inquisitor's Handbook, the additional degrees of success are equal to the multiplier applied to the characteristic bonus - the example given in The Inquisitor's Handbook even explains that Unnatural Strength (x2) grants +2 Degrees of Success.

One thing to note, however, is that Dodge tests are not opposed tests; a Dodge or Parry is made after a successful attack to negate it, while opposed tests are made simultaneously and compared to determine success.

Awesome, thanks for that.

We never really had to do much with them in DH games so the mental/social unnatural trait was largely ignored for players except to derermine how cunning and manipulative NPC's and the like behaved, for the physical it was mostly just tend to hit things hard and soak up damage. So it was fairly simple enough, but they're popping up in RT a lot more frequently in player characters that have implants or mutations.

Nvm, I was mistaken

Sorry, I misread his post. What I meant was that the DoS being added is correct, as he said, but I misread his example, which is indeed incorrect (as stated in RT and IHB).
