Best video/material/demo to show my friends to win them over!!

By FrogTrigger, in Star Wars: Legion

I've been a long time IA player who wants to give Legion a go. I've got a group of buddies who play Warhammer, have been for a while and are always trying to get me to come play. I hate the Warhammer universe, it does not appeal to me at all. They've looked at Legion, almost bit a while ago, have been back and forth on the fence. I feel like a good push could get them all to come all in with me and have a great group to play the game with and build scenery, paint, etc..

My question to you, the Legion community, is if you had to pick a small selective group of material, what would you show them to win them over to the game? A great video would probably be best.

I know if I bough the core they could then try it out, but its an expensive chance at them saying yes/no. There isn't a community in my area to go to a demo day or anything as well, so if they decide they don't like it I am stuck with a core and nobody to play with.

Any and all help is appreciated, thanks!

The guys from Masters of the Fleet got me into Legion.

I originally followed them to learn how to play Star Wars Armada. When the branched into Legion, I was skeptical, but seeing the models and game mechanics got me hooked.

Good luck!

War corgi has some great play through videos. Good editing, and cut aways to minimize the down time. He includes a close up on the dice and an explanation of each roll as well.

How to not take 50 years to paint your guys. I can assembly line-paint a squad of these Hoth rebels in 45 minutes of brush time. Doesn't count drying time in between.

And stormtroopers:

Sorasto for painting.

Empire Strike Back and Return of the Jedi for inspiration.

Star Wars for the Dewbacky goodness!

And

And

Ha, while I enjoy those videos I kind of meant Legion specific demos 😜 But thank you all for the responses!

Follow up questions, if I am buying in with a friend is it a feasible strategy to buy two cores and just one side takes rebels (me) and one said takes empire ? We should end up with double the components, with only Luke being a wasted mini? Then I imagine each of us want a dice pack.. and whatever armies we decide to flesh out from there after playing a few games.

Is this model similar to how x-Wing was in that I will have to buy Empire boxes to get specific unit cards even if I don't plan to use the model?

Definitely get 2 cores and split them. It's a crazy good value. Then buy 1 dice pack. You'll end up with an extra Luke and an extra Vader.

This game does not force you to buy models just to get cards, but you might have to wait for a month or two to get the upgrade on your side (you can proxy until then unless you are playing at a big tournament event).

Ahh ok, so that's kind of what people are talking about with the asymmetrical releases, the cards are balanced as they continue to match releases side for side. Good to know, and actually crazy good for people who just want to play one side. I guess they pulled out all the stops to make sure this game was a success! Exciting for sure.

So two cores would give us more than enough to start playing some games to get a feel for things, then flesh out our lists as we see fit with whats available. Does 2 cores get you up to 800 points?

Edit: looks like with table top admiral just messing around with core components you can get up to 700-750 with some redundancy in units and upgrades. So split two cores and you can field a pretty close to full experience. Obviously not meta competitive, but will give you the real deal experience at least. Interesting. Core seems really cheap to compared to what cores like IA, Rebellion etc.. go for still. I guess lack of board/tiles helps cut down on the cost.

Yeah when you price it out the core sets are a steal. If you wanted to go full 800 and give yourself some more options right off the bat you could each pick up a second commander for like $15 a piece

Don’t get two core sets. Get 3! I’m not joking.

lo.. l? 3 to split between two? What are the advantages of that?

An extra commander off the bat is a great idea, very cheap addition and basically fleshes the armies out to near capacity, plus gives us an even better idea of how a double commander team works moving forward. Like lets be serious, its like Pokemon isn't it? You gotta catch em all? :D

Anything that comes in a core set (such as extra dice) is a poor value compared to saving the money towards another core set. So while the value of a second core set cannot be overstated, the value of a 3rd bears some consideration.

In your shoes, I would buy two core sets and trade. You can pass the dice during a game after all, you don’t both need more now if you’re gonna play with each other.

Two core gives the empire a sucky but legal 800 points. Rebels have like 750 sucky points. So the imperial player needs an expansion to have a fun army, the rebels need more like two expansions honestly. Doesn’t matter what two, whatever you think looks cool as long as they aren’t both commanders. I’d get Chewie and the Specialists pack personaly.

Not all characters are commanders. Chewie and Boba are ā€œoperativesā€.
