Some Simple Comparisons

By MasterShake2, in Star Wars: Legion

It's always interesting to read exchanges about relative survivability of different units, but it's hard to contextualize, so let's look at some numbers, then add on some analysis on how durable some of the vehicles in Legion are. For this example, we're going to assume cover 2 on both speeders and we'll do 2 different sets for the Occupier, 1 where it's taking hits in the front, and 1 in the side. We're not accounting for aim tokens, but, for most of these attacks, aiming would only be a net increase of about 1 hit anyways.

-=Range 4 DLT shot=-

So average is 1.75 hits with .25 crits, so we'll just say 2 normal hits for this analysis because that's the most likely result:

AT-RT - .83 damage

Occupier - .5 damage

Occupier (sides)- 1 damage

AT-ST - .67 damage

X-34 - 0 damage

T-47 - 0 damage

Of note, the speeders' odds of taking damage isn't zero, but at a .25 crit chance, it's only about .17 damage, do still pretty inconsequential and well below everything else.

-=Range 3 DLT w/ Squad=-

With just a DLT upgrade and all surviving squad members alive average hits is 3.25 with .75 crits, so we'll call it 2 hits and a crit.

AT-RT - 1.67 damage
Occupier - 1 damage
Occupier (sides)- 1.5 damage
AT-ST - 1.33 damage
X-34 - .67 damage
T-47 - .67 damage

-=Snowtroopers w/ Flamer, extra guy and Impact Grenades=-

With 6 black dice, average expected hits is 3.75 with .75 crits, so 3 hits and a crit is pretty average. We'll assume 1 model is using the flamer for the X-34 (Flamer does nothing to the T-47, so all impact grenades there.

AT-RT - 3.33 damage
Occupier - 2 damage

Occupier (sides)- 2 damage

AT-ST - .2.67 damage

X-34 - 2.67 damage

T-47 - 1.33 damage

-=1.4FD=-

We'll assume this is built with a barrage generator since that seems to be more common, so 5 black and 2 white with impact 2, average of 3.875 hits with.875 crits, so we'll give it 3 hits and a crit.

AT-RT - 2.5 damage
Occupier - 1.5 damage
Occupier (sides)- 2 damage
AT-ST - 2 damage
X-34 - 1.33 damage
T-47 - 1.33 damage

-=AT-ST w/ 88 and Hammer Pilot =-

Time for the big guns, 9 dice with surges and Impact 4. Average is 5.625 with 1.125 crits, so 5 hits and a crit is pretty reasonable (and pretty severe).

AT-RT - 4.17 damage
Occupier - 2.5 damage
Occupier (sides)- 3 damage
AT-ST - 3.33 damage
X-34 - 2.67 damage
T-47 - 2.67 damage

-=Luke Skywalker=-

It's fair to say Luke isn't rare, and with Rebel Lists, he's one of the most reliable answers to armor that you're likely to see. With his dice pool of 6 black and surges to crits, this gives him about 3.75 hits and 1.5 crits. We'll call it 3 hits a crit, but it could just as easily be 2 and 2.

AT-RT - 3 damage
Occupier - 3 damage
Occupier (sides)- 4 damage
AT-ST - 3 damage
X-34 - 3 damage
T-47 - 0 damage

If we project this out, things that won't die to Son of Skywalker are the T-47 because at most he shoots with his pistol, the AT-ST (even if he gets to the back, it should survive, buts it's likely at damage threshold) and maybe an occupier (if he gets to the side, or gets high average on crits or surges he should kill it even through the red defense dice).

-=Closing Thoughts=-

AT-RT: This thing is made of glass, but anybody who's played it probably doesn't need to hear/read that. Easily the weakest or tied for the weakest against everything. Assume it will die if it receives attention from your opponent.

AT-ST: It generally hovers in the middle in every category and for good reason, it's not particularly strong against anything, but it's also not particularly weak against anything and it's large pool of HP can allow it to absord bad dice rolls better than any other contender here.

Occupier: The consistent theme is that the front is quite strong, but the sides are quite weak even with the red defense die. In fact, the occupier side shots actually beat the AT-RT for frailty in 2 categories (and ruin the AT-RT's perfect record in the process). It looks like you could lose this thing super fast if it gets in a bad position.

X-34: So, this things performance is like an EKG because it fluctuates from awesome to terrible. The theme is that anything that ignores cover really does a number on it, but, unlike the T-47, Armor 2 and being melee attackable gives it a pair of weaknesses we didn't even cover here and that's A) dudes punching it and B)high volume of normal hits. A squad of 5 Deathtroopers just hitting it with their rifle butts does about 2 damage.

T-47: The T-47 won almost every category, but don't confuse that for "most durable". All it really means is that it's defensive tech (Cover, Immune to Blast and Immune to Melee) should allow it's relatively unimpressive HP pool to last longer against relatively average attacks. The T-47 does have 1 major vulnerability that probably leads to some of its perception as being frail and that's RNG. As it's expensive, has a low HP pool, a mediocre defense dice and no defense against units hard rolling criticals against it, it could easily be destroyed or close to by attacks that really shouldn't hurt it that much.

Well, there's some math and basic analysis to chew on, hope you enjoyed it.

I'd be interested to see a comparison between T-47 without a pilot upgrade and T-47 with the new generic pilot that grants Cover 2

This is done for Cover 2, but I can pretty much garauntee the difference is .67 additional damage for most of these.

Out of curiosity, was the new upgrade the reason you computed this with Cover 2? In practice I've found the T-47 for the most part does not get the benefit of heavy cover on my local tables.

That and a lot of players summizing that occopiers had some crazy level of durability.
