Not all reptiles are cold blooded. Tegu are a Warm blooded species of reptile here on Earth. Most Dinosaurs were also likely warm blooded as well.

A fair point. I had forgotten about some species of warm-blooded lizards.

We do though. Star Wars basic premise for planets is each one is a biome, with no changes ever. Hoth is an ice planet, it is always covered in snow and ice, Tatooine is entirely desert, the Forest Moon of Endor is all forest, Yavin IV is entirely jungle. This is a fairly common shortcut used in the 60s and 70s pulpy "sci-fi." Just because something works a given way on Earth does not mean that it works that way in Star Wars, which is more "science fantasy" than "science fiction." Astrophysicists, climatologists, and biologists were not consulted, the writers just wrote what was convenient.

Changing their coat to a brown, lighter "summer coat" on an ice world would cause creatures to freeze to death, especially since we are shown that Tauntauns freeze to death if outside at night, despite being a native species.

Anyway human could have done selective breed some decades ago, so now, like dogs, you can have a big variation on tauntauns. We do know at least they are hunted (Jabba's Palace head) and that they can be domesticated easily. Perhaps it's been done for a lot of years. About 80 per cent of actual dog races has been developed in just four or five decades, unnatural selection is really fast compared to natural selection.

IIRC, at least one canon source points out that Endor has a massive barren mountain range at its equator where the conditions were so bad the empire gave up trying to build the shield generating bunker on it.

Indeed. That's cause it's not the forest moon! It's the sanctuary moon.

Yes, of the kind that currently exist. Tons of domestic animal breeds are now extinct, too.

So you're saying that some bratty reality holoplay star on Coruscant could be carrying around a purse sized Tauntaun breed that shakes and mewls at everything?

I want to go to there...

Well, I'll tell you what he wants, what TauntaunScout really really wants ...

You're just jealous because Dewbacks come in everything from palm-sized to plane-sized.

Thus FFG can release models of dewbacks riding dewbacks for dewbacks with dewbacks on their backs.

It's dewbacks all the way down.

And there's this.

Waving that saber around like that, the tauntaun might lose its head.

At least he'll have a sleeping bag if that happens

Marvel Editor: "What the heck?! The colorist just put light blue on every third panel. I don't care if this story takes place on an ice planet; I'm not paying full price for this. Send it back!!"

Colorist: "Fine. Whatever." *randomly puts color in each panel and waits for his check to clear.*

I want that as an alternate Luke sculpt. He looks like he got good and drunk and is just tooling around on his sweet ride shouting at birds and brandishing weapons

So my existing rebel army is sort of grassland themed. I am definitely getting some tauntauns once they are available I will be painting the riders to match my existing troops but does anyone have any ideas for painting the critters? I am torn between painting them movie standard and just kinda saying that they were imported due to their usefulness or coming up with a new paint scheme and saying they are a local subspecies.

I re-watched that Ewoks episode. The brown "tauntauns" in the children's book I showed you, are indeed grey in the TV show. So. Use that info however you will.
