To buy or not to buy?

By RoBro, in Doom

Before anyone tells me to read the previous post, I have already read it and I have other questions. I am really considering buying this game and quality is a big part of the reason I buy games. This usually is not a problem with FFG but it never hurts to ask. Are the map pieces a good quality material, like a Space Hulk, or is more of like a construction paper?

I play Dark Heresy, and the game is a lot more fun and realistic with sci fi type maps. What size are the grids on the map tiles. How many map tiles are there?

The pieces are VERY high quality, the boards slightly better than SpaceHulk 1st ed, the miniatures very nicely sculpted. You can see a whole bunch of pictures on BoardGameGeek.com. I'm not sure how it compares to Dark Heresy but the boardgame plays surprising like the video game. The sci-fi element is pretty good, IMHO (i.e. it doesn't really feel like a Fantasy/Descent style game). The grid I think is 1"x1", not sure how many tiles overall (the rulebook probably states how many).

Does that help?

Thanks that helped a lot! The 1"x1" is really what im looking for to play dark heresy.

The grid is definitely 1x1, same scale as most RPGs use (at least of those that use maps.) I can personally guarantee the tiles will fit GW minis nicely, just like Space Hulk. The board pieces are high quality cardboard, nice and thick, as are all the tokens (if you're inclined to use those as markers in an RPG.) If you're familiar with Descent, Starcraft or any of FFG's other tile games, these are the same quality. They can sometimes be difficult to fit together (the machine cuts are little tight) but as long as you're careful about dis/assembling them it won't be a big deal.

The plastic figures are nicely sculpted. Early print runs saw issues in that the large, flat bases would often warp on the bigger monsters - not sure if that was addressed at all in later print runs as mine was among the first. =) Still not a big deal to correct if you're a modeller, just use the old hot water/cold water trick. (or cut them off and pin them to GW bases like I did.)

The dice historically had problems but I know that issue was corrected in later print runs. Besides, if you're mainly getting this to use the map pieces (and maybe monsters?) in an RPG, you probably won't need the specialty dice it uses anyway.

All of that aside, it's also a great game in itself. Despite having one of the earlier print runs I have no complaints at all. I did end up kitbashing some fixes to the issues I mentioned above, but really I didn't have to. I could've left the components alone and it would still have been a fantastic game. =)

I even think the boards will interconnect with Space Hulk's boards, though I've never tried it...

i think the boards are better than descent, very nice. and some huge rooms.
