I guess it is an American saying. In high school, "Varsity" is the top level of school sports, while "Junior Varsity" or "JV" are the younger kids.

It's a contraction/archaic pronunciation of "university." From that it comes to mean a sports match between universities (but mainly the older ones in the UK). From that it became associated (in the US) with any senior university-level sports/competitive team, and then that expanded down to the school level. And then you get "junior varsity" which are the lower level teams.

And then it becomes associated (again in the US) with any sort of "higher level" competitive thing, with "junior varsity" being the lower level.

tl;dr: it's one of those weird American terms that only makes sense if you chase it through half a dozen random steps.

It’s the difference between Australia and Australia A.

I imagine there’s an Irish equivalent but my people haven’t been Irish fluent for 150 years now, begorrah.

You're looking for players not commentators, but this is the most fun ideas I've heard of in a while. The fun of list building being brought into a tourney format. Please post some AAR's (both normies and booger eaters) - because this is gold.

In lieu of admitting that my home/work life doesn't support getting involved in vassal tournies very often, I'm going to blame Biggs for having all his best ideas during my busiest season, whether that is actually true or not. Coaching track (that's 'athletics' for you old worlders) gets that much harder when I know y'all are doing something like this without me.

@BiggsIRL , we've never met, but you've provided me so much entertainment on here. You are a credit to the Rebellion - the Imperials may even have to admit that (overlooking the defection for just a moment would be appropriate).

Thanks for the explanations and the Irish was of saying it would be senior and intermediate referring to the Hurling and Gaelic football level of skill.

If people want I can stream some of the weird matches as well as the Varsity level ones I'm in ( where my opponent agrees of course).

This is getting to low on the front page

Wednesday is the last day to get in on this!

Can we get a list of who has signed up just to be sure we did it properly

Sounds fun, but I probably can't commit to more than once a month. So I should probably just log in to Vassal and search for games more once a month.

While I agree that one game per weak is a bit of a challenge... it is a great motivation for playing regularly! I am in!

I really hoped to take part in this one. But work and family keep me too busy in the next weeks. So good look to all players! Be as weird as possible ;)

I've just seen this in the nick of time.

I'm in for weird! Now, does anyone know if any of the fleet builders will let you mix factions?

GET WEIRD!

Due to demand, you can choose when you sign-up to GET WEIRD . If you do, you'll be placed in a League with other weirdos like yourself. JV and Varsity do not apply. You're the guys eating glue in the corner, not the Lettermen Jacket wearers here.

No fleet building rules apply other than the following things:

1) POINTS (400 unless agreed to in advance)

2) UNIQUES (1 use per tournament)

3) COMMANDERS (Gotta have at least 1)

4) OBJECTIVES (Bring 3. I don't care what color(s).)

Go nuts you beautiful, wonderful, booger eaters.

So: no limits on squadrons at all?

Been a bit busy so I haven't been able to post signups and things. I'll see what things look like tomorrow night, and maybe extend the signups or modify the size of the leagues.

Not if you are weird.

Bit out of practice on Vassal but i'll give it a go

Presumably otherwise normal victory conditions regarding 'real' ships left alive.?

Yep all the normal gameplay rules are in effect. Only fleetbuilding rules are weird.

Thanks!

Man, I wasn’t going to sign up for this because a game a week really is hard to get in for me at the moment, but I just really want some nice casual games and getting to play some different stuff.

@BiggsIRL are you sure we can’t use the SSD as is?

edit: I am meaning in the context of the non-weird games; because I’m not interested in the brokenness that will entail, but I need an excuse to try the SSD at least once.
