Minatures

By dustin5, in Dark Heresy

Does anyone know if FF might put out cardboard stand ups for their 40K games (they the ones that come with the new Warhammer Fantasy)? Those things would be really good to supplement our combat scenes. We are slowly collecting Games Workshop minis, but they are difficult to find locally and kind of pricey if you need a lot (hence the cardboard cut outs).

Also, can anyone recommend a good source of 40K minis on line?

Define "good?" The Games Workshop website would be the obvious place. The WarStore offers better prices, but you can't order online and they can only do blister packs and box sets, not individual minis (though I'm not sure GW does anymore either). You can often find good deals and rare minis on Ebay.

I was a little confused by their website (GW's). And of course, for unpainted minis, they are pricey (of course, I bet you can guess I usually don't use these).

Our big local gameshop is out of the Witch Hunter stuff of 40K, so I am trying to look on line.

I like Piazo's web site, but they only seem to have fantasy minis on it.

Games Workshop has a policy forbidding other online stores from posting pictures of their minis or offering online sales of same. Most online stores dropped selling GW minis as a result. A few, like WarStore, created workarounds and sell at lower prices that GW direct sales.

GW minis are seriously expensive and are sold with the intent of building 40k armies not creating Dark Heresy acolytes and their foes. They sold are unpainted and unassembled. They are also very nice models but for your purposes, they might not be the best option.

Are there other types of minis that would also be good substitutes?

I originally do not like to use these things, but have found that they are great for combat scenes (since I am not that good at keeping track of all the chaos). The other GM in our group loves painting these things, has a HUGE collection of fantasy ones (with a few Sci-Fi ones we use for DH). I want to help him out and buy some (or at lest help find a good source).

Thanks for mentioning www.WarStore.com. I got overwhelmed with e-bay (mostly a lot of extra pieces from other sets on there).

If the good folks from Fantasy Flight are reading, man, I would love to see some of those cardboard stand ups like WH3rd ed.

Thanks!

we use a lot of privateer press warmachine and iron kingdoms minis - http://privateerpress.com/iron-kingdoms/miniatures

you can get individual ones from heresy. im a fan of his ganger types with trenchcoats ! - http://www.heresyminiatures.com/

a friend of mine has been buying up the pre painted star wars miniatures from wizards of the coast - while not briliantly painted they are acceptable, plus you coulod look at at-43 if you wanted to go pre painted

On a similar topic, does anyone have any idea as to where I could find a good base for a female tech priest? Most of the GW models don't really seem suitable without heavy conversion.

Ebay! I buy (and sell a ton, most Forge World I have shipped over) nearly all of my miniatures on Ebay. Just go to toys/games/miniatures, war games/ etc. and browse through them. My suggestion is look for auctions marked as "lots" or buy badly painted ones and strip them with engine cleaner (many paint removes turn plastic miniatures into goo.)

Some suggestions:

Games Workshop: Necromunda and Warhammer 40k Imperial Guard, Witch Hunters & Daemonhunters are the best and most accurate. The xenos. etc. (especially the older, original Rogue Trader miniatures -a Gyrinx cat just sold for over $30!) are all Games Workshop. I have converted Mordheim and Fantasy miniatures for some priests, cultists, mutants, etc.

-side note: With the advent of Rogue Trader, the Battlefleet Gothic miniatures are great for space battles.

Forge World: Resin, fragile and pricey but awesome detail.

Privateer Press: Perfect for nobility and rogue trader types, thugs, mutants, daemons esp. the Iron Kingdom line.

Reaper Chronoscope: cheaper than GW but a little bigger in scale.

Dark Age Games: More dirty, apocalyptic style.

Ral Partha/Fasa: Vor, military

Urban Mammoth: Void/Urban War, military (look at the Junkers with shields for Arbites)

Warzone/Mutant Chronicles: military style, odd cultists, etc.

FFG: Anima, mutant chronicles, AT-43, Tannhauser....

You really don't have to follow a common style since every planet will be different when it comes to character miniatures, etc.

Hmm... head over to CoolMiniOrNot.com for many more ideas and examples of poor to peerless miniature painting. So far, it is the best place for miniatures, ideas, etc. I have found (if you have other suggestions, please share.)

If all else fails... Washers and colored stick-on dots (Wow, haven't used them since D&D of the early 80's). You can get a standard 1 inch size for Medium and bigger or smaller ones for different things. Just pick a color for characters, a color for NPCs, a color for monsters, etc. Write on the sticker and when dead, just put on a new sticker.

Head to CoolMiniOrNot.com ... there are quite a few places that set custom bases such as metal grating floors, rubble, etc. Micro Art Studio (out of Poland) has over a 100 base options last time I looked.

Hieronymous, you rock! Those are great!

Thank you!

I like EM4, they have the Grenadier Future warrior line. Not the most 'dark future' but they work well enough for gangers. Plus they are inexpensive, which is something in their favor

Thanks again! Those two are good sites too. I am going to pass these all on to our minis expert (aka "the guy who is the best painter in our group").

Thank you to everyone for the links!

what I intend to do is use a white board to draw the limits of the room maybe some detail too, coupled with some foam from uni and player assigned dice avatars. you don't need minis to have a board (just remember to be liberal in you distance measurement). the nice thing about using dies as avatars is that most hostle "extras" have about 10 wounds, so if you have a bunch of d10 you can track their wonds by showing the number on the die face =)

A good conversion base I've seen used for female tech priests is the sister hospitaliter(or whatever they're called) from the witch hunters range, she can be found in the which hunter inquisitor and retinue box, but also crops up on ebay and if you want something a little bit more consistent try the barter/trade/sell board on dakkadakka.com or warseer.com etc.

That is pretty clever!

Our Dark Heresy GM uses a dry erase hex mat. He has been making his own terrain too.

I personally did not want to use minatures and maps, but after several complaints about my crappy combat discriptions, I decided to give in gui%C3%B1o.gif (and our other GM made the comment that he can loan me his dry erase board).

I don't usually do it either, but I get the feeling that it's a good idea to do so for a game like DH. plus it saves time. I'm not going to go particularly detailed maps that can be measure on, but it's still nice with visuals =). Glad i helped

This is a good basis for one, though it requires a little bit of modification to "40K-ize" it.

She is modular, she had some extra arms so you don't have to stick with her watch. But she'd need a bunch of bionics to be 'techy'

How about this? http://www.freebooterminiatures.de/shop/index.php?s=7bb401330e6880117a25f68063aa8b99&act=SHOP&CODE=03&WGP=1&art=420#

You can actually buy just the body and go from there without a lot of conversion work.

Or a little darker http://www.dark-age.com/showimage.php?id=334

Some of the actually GW techpriests are so heavy modified that you couldn't tell if it was female or not; I don't suspect that female tech priests are very, well feminine in appearance if you can tell at all.

Prince August in Ireland sells just abotu the whole Warzoen range. This was a skirmish level sci-fi game that came out in the 1990s. Therer are soem good minis for DH. See http://www.princeaugust.ie/target_games/index_warzone.html
