Only 1 of (almost) each upgrade ?

By Mumrik, in X-Wing

Riddle me this:

My collection is the Core box, the X-wing 65 expansion, the Tie Fighter expansion, Tie-advanced expansion and the Y-wing expansion.

We were about to play our second game until...

I used the quick-assembly (or what its called) cards, and thats when my confusion comes in:

When I have 2 X-wings, which both use proton torpedos, I find out that I only have 1 proton torpedo upgrade card.

Am I missing something ?

No. Not every quick build is useable simultaneously.

That's quite annoying, as it removes the ability to have some iconic characters play simultaneously ?

And it makes it difficult to play casualy with only the planes that I got, is that correct ?

If you're playing casually, just proxy.

Hmm, alright.

Thanks !

If you'd like, you can print off your quick build cards using http://infinitearenas.com/qbsb/

It has the pilot and full upgrade card text. Outside of tournaments there is no direct need to have all the actual cards if you have a print out or app to show off what you're playing.

Nice ! - Thanks, thats really useful ! 🙂

You've become a victim of first edition fallout here, I'm afraid.

First edition started with way fewer available upgrades, and initially fewer upgrade types as well.

That meant some upgrades were extremely common, as most ships that could take them had them in their expansions. Proton Torpedoes were one of the worst for this. They were everywhere in first edition. In the first wave, the core set and the Y-Wing had them and that was fine. But at least half of all ships that came with the torpedo slot after that also came with ProTorps.

Just buying ships normally without getting multiples eventually got you way more torpedoes than you could ever use in a list.

Second Edition has more upgrade variety right off the bat. And they seem to have made a conscious effort to diversify what's available within a wave. Presumably to avoid the exact same problem where just buying ships overwhelmed you with certain upgrades.

Unfortunately, they went a bit too far the other way with some of them. Four of six ships in wave 1 can take ProTorps, and yet none of them came with it. The only copies are in the core set and Saw's Renegades.

The same is also true of Afterburners, despite 4-5 ships from wave 1 being able to take it (depending on whether or not you count the Fang quick build), and only a single copy being available in the core set.

But yeah, as everyone else has said just proxy the card if you're playing casually.

you may also want to check to see if your FLGS has any of the wave one patron cards on hand. they were an alternate art proton torp upgrade. may be a super easy way to get another.

That seems strange to me. My 2.0 collection was built primarily with conversion kits, and I probably have 20x copies of Proton Torpedoes. I figured they would pack a copy with both the X-Wing and Y-Wing expansions. Those are pretty iconic weapons for both of those ships.

This might be one of the more "off-label" reasons for buying a conversion kit. Each conversion kit comes with 2 of almost every common upgrade card as well as a ton of faction specific cards (depending on the conversion kit). Buying a single conversion kit of your favorite faction will get most of the upgrades for most lists for that faction, though there will always be outliers.

Of course, the actual cards are only "needed" for tournaments usually. Just playing with your friends, and even most casual play in a FLGS, proxying the cards work just fine.
